Power factor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There. That's as fast as we can do.

GA .I really appreciate your fastest answer. I feel sorry for those youngsters who do not even bother to google before shooting such questions. Those who come to this site are expected to have at least the basic knowledge of Electricity. Is it worth spent time for them to answer them . It may be possible that they may not be even reading the replies.

Re: WHAT HAPPEN IF POWR FACTOR IS TOO LEAD?

Dear Mr. V.I.Abraham,

I fully share your sentiments and agree with your views. During the college days, who spent their time in sincerely attending the class and using Library, they shine well in terms of Knowledge (Luck, is another Part - as the say goes " THOSE WHO ARE INTELLIGENT NOT HIGHLY PLACED and THOSE WHO ARE HIGHLY PLACED ARE NOT THAT INTELLIGENT)

This CR4 FORUM is MAINLY INTENDED to share the EXPERIENCE in a specific area or problem.

At the same time we have to encourage Youngsters but this sort of posting appears considerable discomfort, and the Standards of CR4 gets diluted.

I have posted this opinion about an year back, let us see what best we can do as CR4 Members.

Till such time, we have to live with this sort of situation.

I invite comments from the learned CR4 Members. If my comment hurts the feelings of any Member, I be excused.

I am not an electrical engineer but what is "too lead"?

Request for give fast clarification.

If it leads far enough, won't it lag?

The current in the feeder cable will be higher than if the power factor were maintained at unity, and the heat dissipated in the cable will follow.

There can be no faster responce than that.

Understanding Power Factor

In an AC circuit, power is used most efficiently when the current is aligned with the voltage.

However, most equipment tend to draw current with a delay, misaligning it with the voltage. What this means is more current is being drawn to deliver the necessary amount of power to run the equipment. And the more an equipment draws current with a delay, the less efficient the equipment is.

Power factor is a way of measuring how efficiently electrical power is being used within a facility's electrical system, by taking a look at the relationship of the components of electric power in an AC circuit. These components are referred to as Real Power, Reactive Power and Apparent Power:

  • Real power (kW) - the work-producing power that is used to actually run the equipment
  • Reactive power (kVAr) - the non-work producing power that is required to magnetize and start up equipment
  • Apparent power (kVA) - the combination of real power and reactive power

Dear Mr. Lingaraju,

If I understand your question - you want to know "WHAT HAPPENS IF LEADING POWER FACTOR IS EXPERIENCED in the Alternator.?

One straight answer is that the TERMINAL VOLTAGE at the Alternator WILL BE HIGHER THAN THE GENERATED VOLTAGE. In the Lagging Power Factor, it is the opposite to this. This aspect is to be care, as Higher Terminal Votage will result in some other problem.

The excitation current required will be less - this I am not sure and I believe our Electrical CR4 MEMBERS will give a correct picture.

Power Factor is Too Lead - Perhaps there is a "Homework" section on CR4? The quality of the answer is contingent on the quality of the question.
