Liquid Container Rotates About Horizontal Axis in Vertical Plane

Hi,

Could you tell me the source of material to understand the physics of liquid container rotates about horizontal axis (outside the body) in vertical plane.

My objective is to optimize the location of the pump in that rotating container to have most of the time liquid in the discharge line. For that surface level in each degree rotation (minimum possible interval) is needed.

I understood that liquid surface will be perpendicular to resultant force of Weight, Centrifugal force and pressure force at each instant.

I could not get enough material from google search.

Can you explain precisely what you are trying to accomplish.

Why not just use a weighted pick-up on a flexible hose.

Not everything can be analyzed by mathematical equations, nor doess it need to be.

Or, model it using 3D software.

The situation is in Aircraft fuel tank and during aircraft roll. Pump is a submersible centrifugal pump.

Before using the 3D software, i would like to understand the physics of it.

That, at least, gives a clear picture of what you want, and why it's more complicated than it seemed.

But, why re-invent the inverted fuel pickup, when they have been around for many years?

Google "aircraft flop tube."

Now this sounds like homework?

Hang the pump like a pendulum within the tank; then it will rotate to the "bottom" of the liquid ("bottom" being the resultant of forces acting on the liquid).

Flop tube it is.

Letting a pump bang around in a thin walled fuel tank is not a healthy idea. Think about the impact force, when the wing goes thru 5 or 10g accelerations (not you) on a bumpy ride. Neither the fuel pump not the tank would last long. That would cut your flight unexpectedly short too.

Or, if the pump is fixed, gulping vapor part of the flight movement causes the engine to miss, that will or not be restored once the positive g flight is reestablished. That is why aerobatic airplandes have full inverted fuel and oil systems too.

By the way, the fuel will be shloshing around the baffles with no neatly defineable surface.

For mostly pedestrian use flop tube it is. What is the 3D thingy for?

Thank you for your reply.

I've arrived the liquid surface level in a container rotating about horizontal axis for

1. Constant angular velocity

2. Constant angular acceleration

based on the calculation of forces acting on the liquid surface i.e.

1. In Constant angular velocity case, Weight of liquid and Centrifugal force on the liquid

2. In Constant angular acceleration case, Weight of liquid, Centrifugal force on the liquid and the tangential force because of angular acceleration.

From these i've found the resultant force and direction and with the assumption of liquid volume is constant i can arrive the liquid surface. The image i've attached below.

Kindly correct me is there any mistake!
