Which Alloy Will Reduce Hardness in SS316L?

01/02/2013 11:49 PM

Hi all,

in our cold rolling process we change SS316L wire from round to traingular shape, as per our spec our SS316L wire should be 310HRC and above 10% elongation. but the hardness is 325+ and elongation below 10%. we tried with add 0.64%copper in the mtl eventhough we are not getting the tolrence limit, also when we cold roll the required height and width of wire is fluctuating, not steady.

Can anybody suggest which chemical(alloying mtl) should i add to get the hardness and elonga in to limit???

Milo can.

But, it may be the process, not the composition.

Or maybe, your unrealistic expectations?

Are the hardness and elongation acceptable before the round wire is further cold-rolled? If so, can you make triangular wire by the same drawing process used for the round wire? (I.e., pulling it through a triangular die or series thereof.)

What is the size of wires you are talking about? Hardness in stainless steel can not be reduced in cold rolling only. If the elongation is below specs, your start diameter is slightly off. You can not change metallurgic without re- engineering at the base stock. because the alloy will lose the alloy structure. You can change the hardness by sending the wire through a flame or oven to lower some carbon effect.

This is an empiric trial and error mission.
