Primary and Secondary Multiplexer

Hi,

I understand that multiplexer selects one output among many inputs, based on the logic. But what is primary and secondary multiplexer as applied to communication system? I think multiplexer is for analog signals.

When redundancy is required in a communication system, the ASFOM range can be configured to provide back up links on fibre for both point-to-point and bus systems. Redundancy is created by offering two independent paths for the optical signal - the primary and the secondary path. Under normal operation, the primary path is used; in the event of a failure, the system switches to the secondary path.

The two are same and do multiplexing function and are used for analog and digital signals
