Avensis Car Liftback Year 2000 Model

01/11/2013 5:50 AM

The above car stopped as I was travelling home for the Xmas on 21/12/2012. When a mechanic was called in, it was discovered that there was no water in the radiator and the oil had leaked also. Both oil and water were checked before the journey and there was no indication on the dashboard to suggest any problems. The top gasket was burnt according to the mechanic. After allowing the car to cool off, the radiator was filled up with water and the car was driven to the mechanic workshop.
The top gasket was changed and the leaking engine oil seals replaced, but the car refused to start ever since then.

The mechanic claims it is an electrical problem. Some auto electricians had been called in, yet the car cannot start.
I made the following observations while the car was being fixed:
1 Sensor cable was damaged but replaced.
2 One tooth of the flywheel sprocket at damaged.
3 Double paper top gasket was used.
4 Coupling of the enginee did not look satisfactory by my observation.
5 The engine cranks but cannot pick up current.

Please, my fellow CR4 members, what do you think would have gone wrong? Assist.
Thanks

It is the mechanic's responsibility to return the car to you in at least running condition, if it ran when taken to the shop.

I don't have a clue what the problem might be.

The head has probably warped and/or the block cracked...Just leave the car and go buy another,imo...The repair bill will probably exceed the value of the car....

"The mechanic claims it is an electrical problem."

If it is true that "... it was discovered that there was no water in the radiator and the oil had leaked also. Both oil and water were checked before the journey and there was no indication on the dashboard to suggest any problems.", the comment from the mechanic is both face saving and self serving.

If the car was driven at highway speed with no water or engine oil, I am inclined to believe the engine is a total loss. Without a total rebuild of the engine, I further believe the car will never operate correctly or satisfactorily.

It probably is an electrical problem, but if it ran before going into the garage, then the mechanic must have done something to cause the electrical failure. maybe he disconnected a wire and didn't reconnect it. Could be something real simple. Does the engine analysis codes indicate any problems?
