Onerheating Outboard Motor

01/12/2013 7:43 AM

My 1994, 65 HP Suzuki outboard is overheating when I run for any more than a couple of minutes at low RPM. If I run at higher RPM it does fine but when I idle through no-wake zone areas for brief periods the high temp alarm comes on. Is this a worn impellar issue?

Thanks,

Don

did you check the water intake for obstructions already?

Check that the seals around the cooling water impeller are intact.

Check that the impeller is in sound condition.

Check that the cooling water flow path is unobstructed.

At these times that it over heated did you notice whether it was pumping water out the outlet and how much.

The impeller in the pump maybe worn. Kits are available to rebuild the pump.

See if we can all agree on this - overheating is caused by not enough volume of cold enough coolant (water) flowing over the heater (engine).

Causes for not enough flow:

#1) clogged water passages - scale, scum, mud, plastic bags, trash of all kinds may be clogging your water passages. This restricts the water pump ability to flow enough water through the engine. Higher RPM increases pump pressure and forces more water through the narrow passages.

#2) clogged water intakes - all of the above can clog the inlet to the pump and reduce or stop the pump lift/suction to pull water through the pump.

#3) worn water pump impeller. At low speed the impeller blades are designed to rub on the outside wall of the impeller housing. When the blades are worn, they do not press hard enough on the walls, or not on the walls at all, and the pump stalls against the head pressure of the engine.

#4) Combinations of above issues

When you slow from high to low engine speed do you see the telltale velocity fall off to just a trickle? This should not happen. The telltales on Suzikis are designed to spray off to one side so they can be seen from the helm position (if you don't have to high a transom). If you see a good spray at 2000 rpm and a trickle at idle, get the flow fixed before you end up with warped (insert name of expensive parts).

Or - just think and drive like the idiots at my marina - "No Wake Zone" to them means keep the hull out of the water. Who needs idle speed for that?

I did buy an impellar repair kit and I will probably be able to make the repair today. I have had the boat and motor for about 5 years and the water discharge has never been more than a trickle. I have run monofilamint line from my weedeater up through the water discharge port several times in the past but it didn't seem to make any difference. In those 5 years I have run the boat under different conditions (fresh water, salt water; high and low speeds) but I have never had overheating conditions.

Thanks for all the info.

You should be seeing something like this...

The motor might have been started dry(either accidentally or as a test, or by an eager salesman), the impeller can be damaged in a very short time....It may have been borderline for years, in any case it's not a bad maintenance procedure to change the impeller periodically anyway....
