Air Intake Duct for Traction Motor

01/14/2013 1:23 AM

Hi !!!

I'm working on design of Air intake duct for traction Motor . Since the Coach is air conditioned, so air cannot be taken from passenger area. But for taking the air from below the underframe, the following issues are a problem :-

1.There are sometimes waterlogging and flood problem in the area where this train shall be running. So, if we take the air from below, then water may also go into the traction motor duct.

How can I take care of this problem?

Please also give any other information that shall be helpful for designing the air intake duct for traction motor .

The easiest solution would be to duct the incoming air from above the waterline.

What is wanted is cooling, which is achieved by ventilation, either natural or forced. Air conditioning is for human comfort control.

There have been traction motors on trains and locomotives for over 100 years. Hasn't this problem been solved long ago?

Point the opening of the duct toward the direction of travel. Make the duct round with no sharp corners.

This is common sense stuff. And all off the shelf if you look for it.

I the water level is up to the air intake ducting the motor must be below the water. I don't think I'd be worrying about the ducting.

S-89,

Have you considered a liquid-cooled traction motor instead. They are in use for electric delivery trucks, and probably would be available in the size range you require. I have occasionally seen the locomotive traction motors with their driven wheels (on delivery trucks), and don't recall seeing any air cooling components such as ducts or fans.

Ok, the cabin is air-conditioned, what about taking your traction engine cooling air from adjacent to the exhaust vent from the cabin.that way you do not impact the airconditioning, but also benefit from the air-conditioned cooler air exiting the cabin
