Want to Build an Electric Spinning Wheel

01/14/2013 9:33 AM

I spin fibers and make yarn. I am now dealing with disabilities and find that using foot power for my spinning wheel is more difficult. I know there are electric spinning wheels on the market, but I dont have 600 bucks to spend on one. I have heard rumors of being able to make one using a sewing machine motor( I have one). Some belts and wheels for the belts. I have tried for months to track down information on how to contruct one. I am fairly handy if I have info to go on. So far I have collected the sewing machine motor and a wooden box to place it in, and sourced where to get the belts etc. I have the head assembly that will do the spinning and collecting of the fibers/yarn I just need some help with a few things. here is what I need the gizmo to do.

I need an on and off switch, to be able to go in forward and reverse. to be able adjust the tension, I think I have this part figured out. And I need to be able to vary the speed.

I can follow a wiring diagram, but know nothing about switches and electrical components. I had a neon shop for years and have wired many a sign, and I can turn a wrench and read a blue print. I can use power tools etc. I am just at a loss on how to set this thing up. I have tinkered a bit with this but nothing working so far.

I dont want to give up my spinning due to physical limitations and would greatly appreciate any help or guidance you could give me.

Thanks in advance, Candice

You just got the motor or do you have whole sewing machine. Some had controls to do most of what you ask the spin wheel to do.

The old ones had a foot petal or leg activated lever. On them was a switch to start the motor and a pot in it to control the speed. Some where on the front was a switch to reverse the motor to back what you were sewing out. Also a power switch to shut the machine down.

Would help to know what sewing machine you have or what one the motor you have is out of. The real old ones were DC some of the later were AC

On my mother's old machine, the motor was just wired in series with the foot/knee speed control. The motor doesn't reverse, for reverse stitching the fabric feed goes over center and feeds backwards while the stitching mechanism continues in the same direction. To control the speed, I'd just get the foot/knee control for a sewing machine, if you don't already have it.

I don't think these motors are designed to run in reverse. (If there are only 2 wires coming out of it.) If you need to reverse a lot, you may need to get a reversible motor. You possibly could adapt a cheap drill/driver. Or, you could install the motor you have with a clutch arrangement to get reverse. One way would be to mount the motor to swing so that in forward the belt would be tightened to drive. In reverse, the motor would swing to loosen the belt and a rubber ring on the motor would rub a pulley or disk on the spindle, acting as a gear.

Did you check ebay? I just did a search on 'electric spinning wheel' and found a number of machines for less than $300. Not what you had in mind, maybe?

You could look at them and maybe they would give you some ideas on how to make your own. One of them is made of simple PVC pipe, plus a motor and spools:

This is $9.99 on e-bay

Newly listedJANOME SEWING MACHINE FOOT PEDAL CONTROLLER TYPE C-107

I don't know if you need speed control, or just on/off. Mounting the motor so that proper tension is applied to the belt should be the only critical part of the design.

Sewing machine motor was the first thought I had too.

Good luck.

I especially like your stainless steel steering wheels.

To OP: Go for it! You sound like you can do this. Send us a photo or two.

As you have clearly indicated that our friend SolarEagle provided a very good response, I am going to do the customary thing and, after hitting the RATE button in the lower left hand corner of his comment, vote him a 'Good Answer'.
