Hydro Test & NET(NDE) of SA-106 (SA106) (ASME)

01/17/2013 5:38 AM

Hello every good engineer.

I have some question about purchasing SA-106 pipe.

I'd like to know if hydro test for SA-106 pipe is certainly requried or not.

I think NDE(NDT) is allowable instead of hydro test according to ASME Section.II.

Plus, NDE(NDT) is allowed. if owner's specification is not mention about that hydro test of C.s pipe is necessary.

Please answer my question and give your advice.

Thanks.

Chang....

A pressure test of a completed piping system is usually required by your piping code of constuction ( I assume here you are constructing a piping system)

Are you using the SA106 for the construction of a piping system ora pressure vessel. ?

What is your code of construction ?

The completed vessel will be hydrotested, so if this is part of the containment envelope it will be tested also. There are only 2 cases that I can think of that would require a mill hydro test:

1.The vessel's design is such that the cost to repair/replace this pipe in the minuscule probability that it fails final hydrotest would be so high as to justify the cost to test it individually before vessel fabrication. (You could perform this in-house instead of requiring the supplier to do it.)

2. If your customer requires it.

The mill test certificat is a document that certify that the material you purchase comply with SA-106 and i would ask for it if i had to inspect a pressur vessel that was fabricated, repair or alter with that material.
