Microswitch for Switching Mains Light

01/19/2013 11:21 AM

I want to use a 250V AC, 5A rated microswitch in a wall light switch. The device would turn a lamp on and off.

The load would vary from an 11Watt low energy bulb to a 150W halogen bulb.

Although the rating seems sufficient, is a microswitch suited for this purpose?

Are there any problems I should be aware of?

Many thanks.

Why not a regular light switch? What sort of mechanical arrangement will you use for the microswitch?

Happy to use any push button switch which has a pre-travel (distance before contact is made) of over 1mm and a total travel before it latches of 3mm or so. The switch is designed just to be pressed lightly to operate. I just want a switch with a long mechanical life that can handle lamp loads and won't burn out or overheat (despite being appropriately rated). If you have any suggestions, they would be welcome

<...suggestions...>

Yep. Use a commercial product with the correct rating instead of home-brewing something. It saves one becoming unpopular with fire insurance companies.
