Need Help in Identifying Something

01/21/2013 12:23 PM

My elderly Mother received these in the mail. She did not order them, and does not know what they are.

They were sent airmail from China. The address label has her name and exact address.

The customs declaration indicates they are a gift, and are a phone accessory. I doubt they are.

Anyone got a clue? The pen in the picture is for scale.

Here are two more pictures of a single disc out of the packaging.

The discs appear to have a plastic center with what looks like a single strand of wire wound around until they are this size diameter.

Can you check whether the disc is electrically resonating around 8 to 10 MHz?

Is it wire or tape? they look like some of the pinstriping spools I have seen.

Is there any space between the layers, I have seen gaskets made of spooled ridged or flat metal mixed with a composite.

I think you might have it.

I found a small colored tape strip on the edge of one. Once removed, the wire can be unwound. It is like foil tape that is copper coated on one side and slightly adhesive on the other, and is about 1/64" wide.

Then it sounds like it might be PWB prototyping tape, with the tape being the conductor, instead of being used to produce the photomask image.

Probably used for making one-off boards for hobby or prototyping.

I'd either put it in the round file or note to PO that you did not order it.

Re: Need help in identifying something

Wire or flat metal or metalized-plastic adhesive tape? Still hard to tell....... If narrow copper tape, it could be that which is used for repairing missing or damaged circuit-board traces, simple quick prototyping and general lab use. If alum. or some other metal foil, for decorative hobby use, esp. if colored. Same for metalized plastic....... Doesn't look like it, but narrow, black, opaque self-adhesive crepe-paper tapes were widely popular at one time for laying-out printed-circuit artwork, and still is to a limited degree by electronics hobbyists........ Transparent, glossy plastic films & tapes often have a metallic appearance on the roll even when not metalized. Still hard to say from the pix........ Sorry about crappy reply format, but CR4's editor forces me to reply using RAW HTML when replying from my Android phone (PRIMAL SCREAM). Possibly the plan is to be theLAST website on the planet to recognize the inevitable preponderance of mobile users in the next, say, three months. Yes, I'm annoyed.

Yep.

I think the answer is somewhere between here and Lyn's reply.

Metal thin adhesive tape was used for connecting glass windows to burgular alarms

Having applied, repaired, and found ground loops on more windows than I care to recall I would have to say this isn't the foil we used. Nice site though, brought back memories of the old days when the company I worked for purchased smaller alarm companies in order to grow. I had the pleasure task of troubleshooting hundreds of orphan alarm systems installed by people who were in business for a year of so. I learned more about troubleshooting and developing a logical approach to systems from that than any school could have taught.

We're hoping to start talking about a mobile version soon. Trust me, I'd love it too! Moderating is no picnic from a smartphone.

Custom forms would have a company and shipping address. Google the company name find out what they do.

It is probably a good idea to check her credit card statements... right now, all of them. Store cards, gas cards, VISA/MC/AE. Open credit anywhere should be reviewed for anything out of the ordinary.

I am just guessing, but, I think they are coils which are incorporated into the receiver of a telephone handset to make the handset more compatible with hearing aids.

Red and blue tape from Bishop Graphics. Two transparent colors were used to allow a two sided board to be laid out on one side of a sheet of plastic. Photographic filters would allow the red tape to create one set of master artwork and the blue tape to create the other.

It is the varying colors that throws me. I see green, blue, purple/pink white gold and silver.

Are they all the same width? Will the tape stretch or does it wrinkle if you tried to apply it in a curve?

I have seen similar stuff used under a clear coat as pin-striping.

Ya know, that's a pretty good idea. I like it.

The several Chinese dialects are mutually intelligible, so you might be able to get something out of the enclosed written information. Worth a shot.

Check out there web site. I'm sure they would be interested in seeing where they came from.

Problem solved...I did say she was elderly.

She ordered a "fingernail decoration kit" for one of the family girls for Christmas. This was part of that kit that was on back order.

They are spools of different colored foil tape.

Whatever happened to the days of nail polish ?
