They can be used to tell you when a capacitor is fully charged, such as in a disposable camera. There's usually one end to the negative end of the power source and the other to the negative end of the capacitor

I use high efficiency DEDs (Dark Emitting Devices) operating on contra polar energy for my dark room

Thank you very much, "aurizon". After a hard days work 1km underground there nothing like a hearty good chuckle. Cheers. I actually laughed so hard I cried.

Should we copyright the DED = Dark Emitting Diode?

Yes, I can see the writing is on the wall for the classical mined 'dark'. The solid state digital 'dark' will take over.

I am in the gold mining business in Val-d'Or Quebec.

Too right you should copyright.

How about if we concieve of a way to project and maximise the interferance pattern effect?

In the bad old days of the 60's, my lab resatanised photodetectors as Light Absorbing Diodes. We didn't always get the amplifier designs right, so the behaviour lived down to the name on occasion...

It is often be used as Power On indicator on many electrical equipments. I used to use them to make a programable running light, controlled via LPT1 port from my computer. Whatever you wish, you can program to meet your need. Enough fun for cheap.

When at school we would put 12vdc supply across them which made a very satisfying pop. The physics teacher never seemed to notice the hundreds of LEDs we got through every week.

Visit http://www.ledmuseum.org. You'll need to enter past some advertisements, but there is an amazing amount of information there once "inside".

Not yet mentioned: modulate them for communications (both free-space and in glass fibres), sources for spectroscopy, pumping crystalline and glass-fibre lasers - just a few of the better known applications.

*And laser diodes are a LEDs too: used as above, but also used to read and write your CDs, in supermarket bar-code readers (as scanners), beams for surveying (both stationary and scanning), pointers for presentations ...

LED's are also used when we conduct video camera surveys. They light the boreholes/ drill holes. Have heard plumbers also use them for pipe inspections. Intense light but with limited range.

Mining trucks and many commercial semi trailers have them also for indicators,driving/stop lights etc.

Re: What are the applications of LED?

I can conclude the applications of LED as

1. Dislaying and indication

Sucha as LED Video Screen (billboard)

LED sign for message

Industrial sign for time, temp. humidity etc.

Machine indicator. ..

2. Lighting

House hold and office lighting

3. Security

Secirity system use IR LED

5. Gift.

I know some person innovate great ideas in the appliction of LED in gifts designing.

It is pertty in colors and flashing...

Such as LED finger-ring, necklace...

I want to know more about this, it is pretty funny.

Those are all applications where a human or camera sees the light directly. Don't the more technical applications count in your world?

They're used for traffic lights. A circular array replaces a single bulb. They use less energy, but appear easier to see since the light is less diffuse.

Unless you are right under them, and then you cannot even see the light at ALL, much less tell when they change>>>> go figure

Some WISE engineer needs to tell them that a combination of wide angle, (100-120 degree) along with those narrow 15-20 degree angle LED bulbs will cover that for them....

Well, I guess they figure if you need to worry about the color changing when you are right under them, then you are driving through too many yellow lights!

No, I'm talking about where they replace the old style bulb lights with LED, and it's that type of intersection where you pull up almost under the traffic light, not the new style intersections where you are way back from it..

What's worse is that when they moved the lights back, they didn't increase the yellow time!

When I've seen these close-up lights in Europe, they've usually had an extra indicator at a lower level so that stiff-necked oldies can see them as well. I think you should contact the 'equal access officer' (or whatever you call these people) at the responsible authority...
