Schedule 10 Weld Fittings in Malleable Iron

01/28/2013 9:09 AM

I like some opinions here.

Is there such a thing as Schedule 10 weld fittings, I not quite sure what the alloy is, I always addressed it as Black Pipe. I know that have them in stainless.

Its probably a ASME B16.9, Malleable iron per ASTM A197, and the question I have is can I get it in malleable iron Schedule 10 weld fittings.

My company is expanding process, And on the cooling lines we are going from approx 2200 GPM to 9000 GPM @ 75 PSI

It will installed above the process area where we have a SpanCrete Ceiling, Using 18" Schedule 10 Pipe, And since weight is a critical factor on the Loading on this SpanCrete, I did the system curve using Sch. 10 Pipe, with specialized fabricated pipe hangers to spread the weight on the SpanCrete.

My question is, has anyone ever heard of Sch 10 Weld Fittings, My suppliers never really said they don't make it but are very reluctant to supply.

My other alternatives is to use Sch. 10 pipe and Sch. 40 Weld Fittings, recalculate the system curve and resize the pump.

Or use Victaulic Fittings, with the large diameter of pipe the clamps are rated at 100 PSI, should not be a problem.

One other thing, I am looking into composite piping and fittings also, I believe Aquatherm. What I like about it, is that not only does it have a warranty, it also has a 60 year life with a $10,000,000.00 liability insurance in case of failure.

Just looking of some opinions here.

Likely these are special order, so your suppliers may be reluctant to commit to a run of them depending on the quantities you require. I've found that even with SS where this is more common as you've observed, once you get into larger sizes fittings tend to become more standardized- have used the Sch 10 pipe/ Sch 40 weld fitting on SS several times for this reason, as you indicate if the pump curve is right there should be no problem.

Seems to me the Victualic option would likely give you a net savings due to the labour offset versus the welding anyways, as well as being able to build the pipes along instead of prefab & lift or welding at heights. Especially considering grooving Sch 10 instead of Sch 40, sounds like this might be best.

Thank you,

With the Victaulic, Thats what I have come to also. While welding in our laterals instead of using TEE,

Also just received pricing on Sch 10 pipe, and Sch 40 fittings with tapered ends, I am going to run an analysis on the ΔP.

I just came from a meeting with a supplier with the AquaTherm composite pipe.

http://www.aquatherm.com/

Another good option, which corrected me on the liability insurance of $20M not $10M.

Removes allot of risk from my standpoint.

What was never addressed, was pump efficency, and with the flows, if I can do it correctly, there would be a Six Figure savings by not only having the correct pressure requirement, but by controlling the pumps with freq. drives.

Thanks again.

Has anyone have experience with composite piping and fittings such as AquaTherm?

I haven't ever seen welding with malleable iron fittings; the weld fittings I have seen are forged steel.

Like I said I am not quite sure the alloyed or the process.

Weld Fittings as forged then, Thank you.

My friend in India is mfr of composite pipes in collaboration with Netherland firm since 1997. Pipes are mfd from HDPE plastic with inner core of HDPE covered with Aluminum and final cover of HDPE. His pipes are well known and reliable. You may not need malleable fitting for these pipes as plastic fittings are also supplied by him. You can visit the web site:www.kitecindia.com. for more details.
