What CNC Brand or Model With at Least 1 Micron Accuracy?

01/29/2013 3:11 AM

Anyone who can help me find a CNC machine with @least 1 micron accuracy and repeatability specification.

Thanks in advance.

Yep. It's a load of telephone calls to CNC machine suppliers. Could be anyone on the other end.

Asking the question a second time usually does not yield a better answer.

"AT least 1 micron accuracy" leaves it wide open.

Assume you mean at most.

Do you actually understand how small a micron is? I doubt it very much. That requirement, I believe, will disqualify every cnc machine there is.

Do as suggested, start making phone calls.

"With accuracy of ±1 micron, the Womajet/microWaterjet is designed for precision cutting of materials that react negatively to heat generated during other machining processes. Developed by machine builder MDC Max Daetwyler AG and specialist waterjet company Waterjet AG, in collaboration with NUM, the machine is also said to consume less water and abrasive than other waterjet machines."

"The machine provides a stable, precise and repeatable manufacturing process capable of creating complex contours, the developers say. With a cutting stream diameter of less than 300 microns, the machine can handle land widths as narrow as 20 microns (0.02 mm) and cut materials at a rate as fast as 4,000 mm/min. All three axes are driven by NUMDrive C servos, which have a high power density to minimize the size of the control cabinet. Overall control of the machine is handled by a NUM Flexium CNC system, equipped with a NUM FS152i HMI for operator input commands.

The machine is suitable for a variety of materials and applications including biocompatible materials for medical applications; Kevlar, carbon- and glass-fiber materials such as those used in the automotive industry; specialized materials and laminates used in the aerospace industry; and precision components for the watch-making industry."

That would take a servo motor that was microstepped (like 1600 steps/rev) and was drastically gear reduced, also there are all kind of displacements on the shaft, grinding head,(ect.ect.) that would have to be accounted for. Removal rate forget it.

If this is correct, 1 micron is .0000039 inches. 39/100,000th of an inch? Closest tolerences I've ever seen come from a CNC machine is in the 10,000th of an inch at a jet engine manufacturer for bearing surface grinding.

I would contact PNNL, a government development lab in Washington/Idaho, northwest somewhere who is doing most of Nano technology equipment development. Or contact Intel or someone who worked on the particle accelerator.

maximum precision is .01 (10 micron)till date and that will be also vary due to many factors 1-servo steps in a rev 2-reducer precision 3-linear gear and pinion clearance

and back lash 4-heat effects .5-feed rate etc i didn't find a machine near to your requirements .

thanks for this idea and it helps a lot for me to consider when buying a CNC with that kind of specification.

Is this just a re-hash of the question you posted on Jan 24th? (Same question - same answer) -- JHF
