Accelerometer Working Principle in Inverted Flight?

01/31/2013 8:03 AM

How the accelerometer gives the negative acceleration (-1g)value when it is in inverted flight?

Many hand-held telephones have the ability to determine which way is up these days. How about a telephone call to the telephone equipment manufacturer to find out, perhaps?

Especially when you drop them!

An accelerometer measures in general a force thus when the force is <0 it means it has an output negative and this means that the vector has the other direction (opposite) to the one for which the signal is >0.

With a negative (below zero) value if output is analog or with Two's complement if output is digital. S.M.

Aircraft "G" meters are made to feel the + & - forces. If you were to take a unit apart you would see that the meters movements are bi directional. Hence +/- readings. The newer electronic units work in a similar fashion sensing the movement of a weighted unit on an electrical slide if you will relating to positive voltage and to negative voltages (thats a very simple explanation).

I forgot to add that inverted is the only way to fly! Straight and level is not much fun anymore. Give me a good snap roll with a newbie any time.
