Being Human...in Two Places at Once

02/03/2013 10:08 AM

Now you can be in 2 places at once for just $2000. with the new bot Double....

Blurb...

"Double is the simplest, most elegant way to be somewhere else in the world without flying there. The minimalist design and intuitive touchscreen controls allow you to freely move around without inconveniencing others. You can stay at eye level, whether sitting or standing, by adjusting your height remotely, which makes conversations fluid and real. Retractable kickstands will automatically deploy to conserve power when you are not moving around. Efficient motors and lightweight design give Double the ability to last all day without recharging the battery."

I swear that many of the drivers on the road are already in two places at once and it didn't cost them $2,000.

Maybe on the factory floor for monitoring purposes. Maybe. Workers would look at it like it was a spy, if not used properly.

Schools??? Get real. Wouldn't last a day till it was stolen or disabled.

I can see it to remotely monitor and communicate with sick people or family members, but also used by irresponsible parents who would use it as a baby sitter while they're out partying.

Museums and galleries, yes, for sure. Could be a great tour guide, or roving attendant.

Hazardous area surveillance and security come to mind too.

Yes I think museums would be a good use, have an icon appear for whatever exhibit you're looking at, that you could click on for an in-depth study of the item.....that would be great, sort of like " mysteries at the museum" unleashed....tours of facilities....tech conferences would be great, ces, sema, and the like...Border surveillance maybe, if there's an all terrain model under development...

My fair city has some 30+ pieces of public art located along a 1/2 mile stretch of Main Street. This would be great for conducting walking tours. (since it never rains here)

Hell, lyn, just send the damn thing into work whilst you go fishin'! When your employer sends one of its own to spy on you, just have yours turn around and say, "WTF you starin' at Stickman? What's good for the goose is good for the gander!"

Other uses:

Having discreet affairs with your secretary via your respective Zoombas. They all look alike, so who would know if that was your wife's pic she sticks on her screen? In my case it would definitely put a damper on things so never mind.

"And whom are we today, Zoomie?" - use it in training new therapists on how to spot Multiple Personality Disorder in their psychiatric patients. Swap out the pic it shows each day with a different one and grade the budding therapist on whether he or she notices. For added authenticity program it to send cards every year. "Merry Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanza/Dec 25th from all of us!"

Put a ski mask over the screen and program it to rob convenience stores. If the clerk is also a Zoomba, ordering it to "Stick your hands up!!!" may sound a bit awkward, as would "I've got a gun!" (though I suppose one could duct-tape highway safety flares to that pole thingie for added effect).

Use it to annoy the hell out of those TSA weenies at airports by sending it through the security scanners over and over whilst having it demand to be thoroughly frisked each time 'and no hanky-panky this time or it's going on Instagram!" Payback.

:-))

I wonder why they went with the effort for a Segway like gyroscopic stability? A three or four wheel approach requires much less complexity in motion control.

You pose a plausible reason there. At the same time if robotic virtual presence (there has to be a better name) does take off then cheap knock offs may have an avenue around patents by making three or four wheel versions. A unit that switches to articulated motion could completely bypass patents by also climbing stairs.

What about a deployable quadrocopter skycam as an option....

What about a Clonebot?

A three-wheeler would have a larger footprint and, because the unit would be depending entirely on those wheels for its stability, their spacing would have to be sufficiently great to resist the unit toppling on handicap ramps and such. In the 80s we developed autonomous security, manufacturing and research robots and dealt with this issue firsthand. That gyro-stabilized 'Segway'-style drive is by far the preferred approach in this application.

The EXACT SAME QUESTION occurred to me as soon as I saw the picture.

There is no stable "power down" mode, unless you lean it against a wall or something.

"It has a "kick stand" for parking."

Is this a gender universal feature?

Imagine the fun you could have with this thing, like following some random person around in a mall, the screen showing a big and making sinister "Hehehe-ing" sounds. Or having it stand at a public urinal, it loudly "Ahhhhhhh....ing" then asking someone to help tidy it up a bit. "Say, Bubba, can you lend me a hand?"

Might wanna peel off that KrisDel™ logo first.

Use it to taunt the neighbor's dog - especially from second-storey windows. (sorry Binky, but it seems you were destined for Greater Things than drooling on my lap, leaving half-dismembered mice on my doorstep and digging those razor-sharp claws into my legs when you were petted).
