So this is about the wiring outside the equipment? If so, then follow the manufacturer's instruction leaflet that came with it.

To quote the site to which PW linked: "Variac transformers are AC voltage controls that provide a variable AC voltage" (my stress).

I think you mean something else - maybe just a variable output AC/DC power supply?

BTW - this is my 10,000th post on CR4 .

OOPS!, should have checked the other members on this thread first. Del, Lyn, etc. They are way out in front.

Sorry John you must actually be quite young (compared to them).

All the best CR4 'Er's. Keep up the good work

John

No. A Variac works only as designed on AC signals. Designing a Variac requires much more understanding of magnetics and fundamental electricity than you have since you asked this question. I suspect you actually want a different device. An existing design variac maybe part of the system you need but I will not guess what it is that you actually need.

Re: Variac

Hi there

A variac is actually a variable voltage output test set. You put in 220V AC which then gives u variable voltages between 0-265V AC...(not AC signals)

You also get a 380V variac which gives 0-430V AC +- outputs "three phase"

Both these variacs can be used in testing "Power Transformers".....

1. Single phase Variac for testing "Transformer earth fault protection"

Normal HV and LV earth fault protection and also REF (Restricted EF protection)

2. Three phase variac for testing

"Power Transformer Impedance" when the test current is to high

Should be more clear to some people what a variac is

Greetings
