Remote Controller for Laptop

02/05/2013 4:28 PM

We use either our Toshiba our HP Laptop to connect to one of two kinds of Projectors to displays Power Point training programs.

I need to purchase a hand held controller for each laptop that will allow me to operate the page up and page down keys while I am in the front of the room next to the projection screen.

What search words and URL's do I use to find where I can purchase these items?

Thanks for the help.

It would seem that that this would require that the computer was connected to the Internet. We do not have access to the Internet at all of the location that this equipment is used.

Each projector has an IR remote controller that controls the projector. Unfortunately it does control the Laptop.

I thought that one of our older obsolete laptops had an IR device that plugged into the Laptop. It received IR signals from a hand held Controller.

I could not find a user manual for either Laptop to see if they had a built in IR detector. thought that I could find it on the HP or Toshiba website but I did not have an luck.

Found something called an FLPR (if messing around with a phone is being considered).

Silly question, but do the laptops have USB ?

Does the laptop have Bluetooth? you could (make/)use a program on a smartphone that uses the projector's API

Search for "presentation remote" I bought one on clearance from Wal-Mart a few years ago for $8.00 it has worked great, Uses a USB Dongle and even has a laser pointer. They usually run about $20-$30.

As the things would be practically useless without one, most, if not all, digital projectors are shipped with a hand-held remote and a dongle that plugs into the USB port of the computer. If one is not to hand, simply order a replacement from the projector supplier or any other on-line purchasing facility.

So a wireless Presentation Controller is what I need to investigate.

Thanks for all your help especially Lyn for the links to the stores and Kris who sent a picture of that unique digital controller.

Kris,

Did you build this from plans in the "Nut and Volts" magazine or an Internet search?

I wish I had built it, it's cool. Found by a quick search (using something like 'steampunk projector'). If you look up "steampunk <anything>" you'll find some amazing stuff.

Glad that you are closer to a solution. I'm sure all will appreciate it if you get back to let us know which gadget you eventually find that does the job.

Any wireless keyboard/ keyboard and mouse combo will work. Unless gaming, I love my wireless stuff. Be sure to verify the range requirements because I have a very nice logitech keyboard/mouse but it barely reaches across my large desk, where as I have another logitech keyboard that works well for 30ft. plus. Both claim similar specs so check reviews for more appropriate information. Also RF seems better than IR for the transmission medium. These will give you your up/down scrolling plus any other input. Many will be programmable so the mouse scroll wheel or any of the buttons could be set to give you the page forward/backward or any other command structure you may find usable.
