Diode with Half Arrow Symbol Means?

02/08/2013 3:33 PM

Can someone please tell me why the diode symbols in this diagram of the multiminor mk4 multimeter just have a half arrow please?

Because the designer was restricted by ink budget cuts. S.M.

I believe what you have is a old Shockley diode there.

Thankyou, it might well be. I looked online just now for shockley and can find some near matches for my symbol but none just the same. Maybe mine is some old U.K. version. david

Half diac, to delinearize or trigger what? The AVO moving coil? (LOL) It's a plain diode.

Might just be a plain diode ... it makes sense since it just seems to be rectifying A.C. So is the symbol just old version? I have the actual meter and I have looked... but it could be anything.

The new Shockley diodes are fast.

The old ones?

Halfast.

Pun noted but a Shockley diode is very different device from the more common, very fast Schottky diode.

Strangely enough, your link from above refers mainly to Shockley diodes but at one point adds another variety, the Shottley.

In Figure 13 we have created a parameterized Shottley devices U1. The AC source V4 is 110V. The parameters passed to the devices U1 and pwl source will have the values shown in Figure 8.

Use four of these, drop a t and get one of these.

its a diode, sort of like a check valve for electricity

Fredski - I spent my education learning electronics. For the last 30+ years, I have worked on laboratory blood analyzers - much fluidics. My old boss used to wonder why we learned electronics to work on plumbing.

BUT, I find so much in the plumbing/fluidics is so related to electronics.... a tube is a wire, a one-way/mono-flow valve is a diode, a coil of tubing is a choke/resistor, a tank is a capacitor.............

Most days, I do not need the electronics - but wait until there is noise on a line or a CPU that needs work. THEN the electronics guys gets called!!!

The plumber or mechanic rarely knows electricity. If you know electricity, you can master plumbing and mechanics.

Some what off topics but you are correct. A good electrician makes a good trouble shooter for hydraulics and other such issues.

It's funny too that in electronics we often try to put things into layman terms using water flow as an analogy which helps people visualize and understand the theory of electricity easier.

Thanks. In one of the manuals there is a circuit diagram from AVO of the same multimeter with the "normal" diode symbols and it says it is a OA95 which is a "normal" diode.

This is an antique. Perhaps symbols were not as standardized when it was built.

Yes I know its antique and that has an appeal to me. All that Bakelite and chunky switches and aesthetic design.
