Hi faranak,

How wide and how thick is the sheet and does it have any reinforcement moulded in it?

Best regards,

John

Depends entirely on what is meant by "rubber".

You CAN ONLY do this with a thermoplastic "rubber".

So, if you have black rubber that smells like sulphur you are out of luck.

What's wrong with an adhesive, or even cyanoacrylate?

You must know what the materials are before making any kind of intelligent decision about how to proceed.

This is a rubber sheet. How high of a strength can you get? Regardless of any joining method you use, the joint or the transition from joint to sheet will be the weak link.

It certainly will be helpful to know if this rubber sheet is balloon material thin, reinforced conveyor belt, bicycle tire inner tube, Caterpillar bucket loader tire material thick or anything else. I also highly doubt that you have natural rubber with no reinforcing material inside the material.

My recommendation is for you to contact whoever provided this material to you. Tell them what you wish to do with this material and why you require a strong joint. This will be much more productive than a public forum having to play twenty questions finding out both what material you have and how you wish to use this.

For the sake of giving you an actual answer to your question... Stitch the ends together with a cord similar to the reinforcing material used inside the sheet. This is a common method used in making conveyor belts.

When you are following redfred's advice about contacting the manufacturer or supplier, you might also ask them if they offer the correctly sized stock.

Depending on the type of rubber, the best is Vulcanizing.

AS MENTIONED, LOOK INTO CONVEYOR BELT CONSTRUCTION--ALL LENGTHS AND WIDTHS AND THICKNESSES--

If the rubber to be joined hasn't been cured previously, the adhesive supplied by the manufacturer, once cured, should give you a joint as strong as the base sheet material - lap joints and a 45 degree butt joints are commonly used in lining applications. Try one out and steam cure it and test the joint to see.

If you're talking about a previoudly cured natural rubber I'm not sure what to recommend, honestly.

Look up vulcanizing in conveyor belting. Process is there. Whether it fits your application?

Hot and cold vulcanization are two methods

Hot Vulcanization:Involves heating and pressing rubber layers together along with uncured compound patches (available with local supplier) Cold Vulcanization : using chemical adhesives that cures at room temperature without the need for heat.
