Help On A Way To Reduce Or Remove Ammonia Emissions

02/28/2013 10:50 AM

Hello,

I have an oven that bakes a product. Ammonia gas is released as a byproduct. The problem is that we are reaching our permitted allowable concentration based on lbs/hr. Does anyone have suggestions on technologies that will reduce the ammonia gas content without adding a large cost to produce? i.e. Thermal Oxidizers

Thank You,

Can the NH3 be captured, converted to ammonium hydroxide or some other value product, and sold?

Hello, it would be important to know the temperature at which the process takes place, as well as the amount of released ammonia

The process is a baking process where ammonium bicarbonate is used as an ingredient. The concentration cannot exceed 27ug/m^3 and the weight cannot exceed 12lb/hr.

I use Anguil to service and test our Regenerative Catalytic Thermal Oxidizer, they are a good company.

If the ammonia can be gathered, it can then be burned in a flare. A search on "ammonia flares" should turn up various systems.

I also think ammonia can be neutralized with carbon dioxide.

Ammonia dissolves readily in water, so some form of counter-current scrubbing tower might be an attractive solution. However, it also increases the pH when it dissolves, so treatment of the tower effluent with cheap dilute acids such as hydrochloric may be necessary to stay within discharge consents, depending on concentrations and flowrates, which aren't stated in the original posting.

It's a job for a Chemical Engineer. If there isn't one to hand, then hire one.

Slow down the process.

If that's not practical then you will have to spend some $$- see #4↑. First glance seems that a scrubber running dilute acid may be more cost efficient as well as cheaper than thermal oxidation, but that's a job for onsite evaluation as you will have solution disposal to keep in mind.

Without SOME indication of WHAT you are doing it's DIFFICULT to answer such a broad question.

I suggest installing a small scrubber using nitric acid or sulfuric acid as the reagent. Once the reagent is spent you can evaporate away the water and recover the ammonium nitrate or sulfate to use as fertilizer.

During a tour of a cheese factory I was amazed at the amount of ammonia released during the aging of cheese. You have nothing to lose by visiting a cheese making facility and learn how they deal with the problem.
