What Does 2 * 1500/1 A Current Transformer Mean?

03/03/2013 10:21 PM

I am working in 400kv Switchyard. Here all current transformers are mentioned as 2*1500/1 A rather than 3000/1 A. Now I would like to know why this kind of nomenclature is used.

Apart from the obvious answer (it's just two 1500/1A current transformers), are you saying you have a current transformer that is marked 2*1500/1A but is actually for a 3000A primary current?

It is connected to a bus of 3000A

By the way, 400kV x 3000A x √3 = 2,076 MVA switchward (2 GVA) is this correct?

If I saw that on a one-line diagram, I would interpret it simply as 1500:1 CTs on 2 phases.

What is the rated current of the circuit -1500 or 300A. If 1500A it might mean 2nos CT 1500/5A one for measurement another for protection,if it is single line diagram.

It means that you can make connection (parallel or serial connection) for all current transformers and choose ratio 1500 or 3000 A / 1A .

Good luck

Hello,

That means you have a C.T. with a double primary winding. If you connect them in parallel you have the double primary current (in your case: 3000 A). This is because your installation has been increased in current, and all switchyard had to be increased in a same way. It is common at conception of a switchyard when it has not been well defined what will be the nominal current, carried by the O.H.Lines. The conception had certainly defined that nominal current would increased at the most five years after starting of the switchyard. And also due to the big price of the 400 kV C.T.'s and their not possible replacement.

Hello, BRZK
