Which is the Best Motor Brand?

03/04/2013 3:01 PM

Hello,

I've got an old 10HP Air Compressor by Quincy and now I need a motor replacement. The problem is that I'm not sure which brand to pick? By price I think this site sells cheaper https://www.mrosupply.com/index, but the question is Leeson or Weg? Maybe Baldor??

I really don't know much about this, any help will be very much appreciated!

Thanks,

David

Leeson, Baldor, American never heard of Weg are all OK motors.

I used a lot of 5, 7.5 and 10HP Baldors as continuous duty pump motors with good luck.

Never put one on a compressor.

Take your pick.

I would say proper installation and maintenance are more important factors...

We'll address the problem of belt wear next month!

Leeson or Weg? Maybe Baldor

They are all well known and fine brands to go with.

What was the motor failure? If it's burned out, probably too expensive for a local motor winder to fix.

Was there any current trip switch to protect the motor from burnout (if that was the failure). Did too long, too small service wiring cause excessive current draw?

As many of the responders state, all of the brands you listed are good motors and provide good service. Just make sure you get a motor rated for compressor application as most compressors put high torque demands on the motor at start up which can cause motors not designed to handle that to prematurely fail.

If you have an old Quincy Compressor check your unloader. Failure to properly unload the compressor will lead to failure of a new motor very quickly. Old compressors used the oil over air to unload. A small amount of dirt will stop the operation of the unloaders.

Leeson and Baldor are decent brands. I never heard of Weg, but other responders say they are also OK.

A more critical factor to consider is the type of motor and service factor. Most compressor manufacturer's will slightly over load the motor. I would recommend a 1.15 service factor at a minimum. Also you might get by with an ODP (open drip proof) motor, but if the area is dirty, a TEFC (total enclosed fan cooled) is a better option.

The other issue is why did it fail? If you do not identify and fix the cause of failure, you might be buying a motor that will also fail in the near term.
