Slury Immersed Wire Rope Maintenance

03/06/2013 2:08 PM

Good day to all.

We are currently building an underground dam by digging a 50 meter deep trench across the valley and pour a concrete to it to form an underground wall, in that way rainwater absorbed by the soil cant flow towards the lower level of the valley. Eventually, water will accumulate and rise. In digging we use a hydraulic powered trench cutter supported by a wire rope to support the trench cutter unit into and out of the trench.

In actual operation, this wire rope will be immersed into the slurry or mud. What is the best method of maintenance for the wire rope in these kind of environment?

I want to make use of the used gear oil as lubrication for this wire ropes because I have read that an oil is good because this could penetrate to wire ropes internal. Is it advisable? please help...

Bio-Miscellaneous Specialty Products might be a better choice, environmentally.

Good Day,

I use 316 Stainless Steel Wire rope in the Offshore Drilling market in sizes from 1/8" and up to 1" all the time. Just be sure all the components used (Clips & Clamps) on the 316 Stainless Steel Wire Rope are of the same materials.

We have even had the 316 SS Coated with PVC to prevent abrasion to other materials the wire rope might rub against.

There are many Non-Metallic Heavy Load materials used for lifting ropes used today in trenching today.

Thanks for the advice bro. Is it useful or worthwhile to lubricate the wire ropes with grease or oil knowing that this wire rope is in contact or immersed in water, slurry OR mud when putting down down the cutter unit into the trench?
