"Online Maintenance" Translation

03/07/2013 12:01 AM

Gentlemen,

I am a Portuguese citizen and a freelance English-Portuguese-English translator. Can anyone please explain in clear English terms the meaning of On-line / Off-line maintenance and Lubrication line-up(s) which appear in the following paragraphs:

Due to the potential exposure to risk and hazards associated with on-line maintenance, a number of companies have developed specialised equipment and techniques that allow on-line maintenance activities.

Operators who are familiar with equipment can be extremely helpful. They will know about any changes in. plant operation that might have affected a particular component. For instance, the operator may have shifted lubrication line-ups, and the new system line-up may have a clogged lube oil strainer.

Thanks a million

Francisco

For off-line maintenance, the equipment being maintained must be idled; e.g., shutting down an engine to change oil and filters.

On-line maintenance can be conducted while the equiipment remains running. Typically, this requires things like duplex filters and strainers, refillable lubricant dispensers, and special oil sump arrangements.

GA.

In addition, the operators sometimes make undocumented modifications to the equipment or the equipment arrangement and you can only get that information from them. A clog may be hidden in the modified arrangement.

In hydraulics, an "on line filter" is placed in the return line (usually) & the entire oil flows thro' that. An "off line filtration" unit has a separate pump & a filtering/ cleaning system such as ultrasonic unit working in a parallel circuit
