Card from Camera Won't Work in My Laptop

03/06/2013 5:56 PM

I baught a windows 7 professional install disc for my Sony Vaio laptop. it is a Dell install disc but said it would work on any Laptop or computer. It installed ok I didn't even have to put in a Product key code. It seams to work ok But I went to put some pictures on my computer with the card out of my camera. When I put the card in the light does not come on and it will not download the pictures off my card. Is there a setting I need to change or a driver I need to download. Anybody have any ideas?

Yes.

Talk to the seller of the install disk. Let me guess. He's long gone, with your money.

Can you connect the camera directly to the PC and download using the operating system resident in the PC?

Do you know all this hodge-podge is compatible?

Have you heard of, "let the buyer beware"?

I'm not sure how, "Can you connect the camera directly to the PC and download using the operating system resident in the PC?" which is what I said, is that different from, "Can you connect a USB cable between your camera and your PC?", except that I assumed that you would posses the intelligence to know HOW to connect the camera to the PC.

Sorry if the sarcasm got under your skin.

Bye.

It is not what you say but how you say it.

Is (SD) card driver up to date?

Can you connect a USB cable between your camera and your PC?

That's the way I've always transferred files from my cameras, previously a Canon and now a Nikon. When I connect the cable and turn on the camera, a window pops up asking which program I want to use. I scroll down to the (previously loaded) appropriate driver (for Canon or Nikon), click on it, and the software takes over, transferring the images.

My printer has a slot for a camera memory card, to print images directly from the card, but I've never tried it since it's easier to use the USB cable.

I had a similar problem with my XP setup. The built-in SD card reader will read regular SD cards, but not SDHC cards. I think this is a trait of XP era machines. I get around it by using a cheap adapter which you put the SD card in and then plug it into a USB port.

When I worked on a friend's Vaio I discovered that there a lot of additional drivers required that come on a Sony distribution but not on a generic one, an example would be for a Sony Memory Stick Reader which only Sony seems to support. Similarly for something like a built-in card reader, some hardware vendors' versions are slightly different forcing you to use their drivers.

A generic install disc knows alot about most the different motherboards, cpus, memories, etc., but it doesn't know everything, and when the basic functions of the system work fine but a specialized piece of hardware doesn't, it's time to go to the manufacturer's website and download those missing drivers.

Re: Card from Camera Won't Work in My Laptop

03/08/2013 1:09 AM

Years ago, a friend gave me a Windows disc - my Compaq desktop HD crashed and I didn't have a backup to start it. When I installed the Windows program, it all went fine - that is until I went on the internet. Somehow Microsoft found out that I used a disc I wasn't suppose to and they gave me some time to fix it or else. Well, I didn't fix it (fixing it meant buying Windows, which I didn't want to do because my Compaq came with Windows - I was paying twice).

When the deadline arrived, my computer went into some shut off mode. I tried to re-install Windows from the disc and it wouldn't work. I finally threw in the towel and bought a new desktop.

The lesson I learned is:

1. Make a start disc while the system is working.

2. Don't take anyone else's Windows disc and load it on to my computer. Somehow, Microsoft knows.

3. When a HD crashes, it makes more sense to just buy a new system. Technology moves so fast and a four plus year old computer is a dinosaur, so why fix it. Just get a new one.

4. Always back up my hard drive! Always!

I hope this helps.

In most civilized countries, the law has changed some time ago and Microsoft is not allowed to do that anymore. At a guess I would say almost 10 years ago, but I may be wrong on the time scale.....

The disk is now the property of the legal owner and not that of Bill Gates (as he tried to make out years ago!!!)

You can buy and sell and use original copies of a MS Operating System and install it on your computer, but on no others.....you may not install it, make a copy and sell either it or a copy of the original and its password. In fact its the password that may only be installed on one computer as the disks are all the same....

The problem the OP had (which is now posted here as fixed) is as someone else posted, it was only due to the missing special drivers for his particular laptop on an install disk made for another brand. Nothing more, nothing less.

In my limited experience (up to and including Xp), you can buy almost any legal copy of the operating system, install it and then using the install process and a CD/DVD supplied with your PC/Laptop hardware, add all the needed drivers to make everything work....

First, try cleaning the contacts with an eraser.

Other than that, from my experience, can you place that card back in the camera, and view the contents of the card on the camera now? If not, then it is possible that something may have damaged the card. I had an older USB multicard reader, that only had to damage one card, before I chucked it. Have you ever tried to read that card from a USB card reader?

I didn't see anyone say it, and it's not sarcarm.

Make sure there is not a little tiny grey slider on the side of the card from your carmera that locks access when slid one way or the other.

It's probably not the issue, but it's very easy to check, and free.

Just for the record, the Lock slider is there to prevent modifying the contents, not to prevent access, it's just like the old Write Protect tab on floppies (remember those?).
