Strange Problem with My HD

03/09/2013 8:40 AM

Dear users, I bought a new WD Caviar Green 2TB harddrive two weeks ago. SHopkeeper also gave me SATA(in red color) cable

Since then I am facing a strange problem i.e. sometimes my computer hangs and nothing works unless I turn off my PC, plug out the sata cable and reinserted the cable and start it again and it works normally. I repeat this procedure again and again after short intervals of time.

Sometimes I restart my PC insted of turn off and the following screen appears. I again turn off it and repeat the procedure given above.

Please guide me what to do?

Call their customer service. From their web site:

"Our customer support lines have longer operational hours to ensure you get the help you need when you need it. Our toll-free customer support lines are here to help or you can access our WD Support site for additional details."

When you are fully frustrated because you can't make it work, return it and the red cable and buy another brand.

I've seen SATA data cables that have caused some really strange problems. If you have access to another cable (i.e. a friend or neighbor), I'd try that first. If you have to return anything, I'd take it all back, as warranties don't leave much room for your own troubleshooting. Good luck, and don't forget to back up the critical stuff often.

If this drive is being used as the main C drive it's not design for it. Only to be used as a secondary drive. Maybe going to sleep to save power(the green part).

Presumably you are having to do a forced shutdown when it freezes, do you do this after a reboot or do you just hold the power on switch until shutdown? If you are at the shutdown situation do the following:-

Turn your mains power off after after shutdown then depress your start switch the computer lights and fans will flick on momentarily , then turn your mans power back on and see if the computer starts normally without removing cables. if it does it is possibly a faulty SATA cable. you should check that all your other cable plugs are firmly connected in their sockets.

Also the RAM memory, if fault persists try removing one RAM card at a time [don't forget to remove from the last position first] to see if the fault goes away.

Dear User

Thanks for reply. Yes:

1. I hold the power button untill my computer shuts down

2. Plug out the SATA cable

3. Wait for 4 to 5 seconds

4. Re-plug the cable

5. Turn on the PC from power button

and yes yesterday one of my RAM(i have 1GB +1GB) was having the fault because when I turned on PC, it was beeping thrice.

I think you have faced that problem also. Thanks a lot friend for guiding me. At the moment I am in my office. Will try your suggestion at home

Thanks

It would help us to help you if you specified what OS you are using and if it is fully up to date or not......

Many OSs have problems with huge drives, some have fixes.

What format are you using in the drive, they are usually formatted to FAT32 for usage as an external USB drive or for Linux, which is wrong for your application, you need a full NTFS format.

After you have done this, see if the problem returns. If you already have NTFS format, try a 4096 cluster size.

I will try and think of something else....

Best of luck. Let us know what happens.

Dear Andy,

I formatted the whole drive in the windows 7 setup when I first time bought it and made 6 drives each of 300GB each(last one is of about 365GB). THan I formatted the all remaining drives in windows in NTFS selecting "default allocation size".

Well done, that was the right thing to do. I was just checking as many make errors in this area....

You could try and see if there is an updated firmware for the drive and if its possible to do it yourself....not always true.....

Do I understand that you have plugged this into an unused connector on a computer you have had for some time?

If so, i suggest that you shut down, unplug, clean both halves of the connector with CRC contact cleaner, re-plug and power up.

It is quite likely to have dust in the connector which may be affecting the connection intermittently.

I have had problems like this with a video card and a bios chip which had to be periodically re-seated before the computer would boot.

Dear All,

Thanks for you replies. My motherboard was faulty. Now I am planning to buy new motherboard with Intel Core i5 3570. Can you please suggest me which MB Brand is best for general and gaming purpose?.. Intel or Asus?
