The difference is whether the tap changer contacts are in oil or a vacuum. It is a matter of economics and/or customer preference that determines which is used since they both perform the same function; i.e., to quench the arc when the tap changer operates under load.

It should be noted that in a vacuum tap changer, the vacuum bottles that perform the tap changing are also usually under oil, but the oil serves mainly as general insulation and cooling, not as the arc-quenching medium.

Dear All.

Can someone guide me to a schematic illustrating the difference of the two types.

It appears that utilities have a preference for vacuum type. Even if oil type is accepted, it is accepted with filter.

But in order to understand the actual difference in operational principal, and the advantage of vacuum type is there any guide? or paper!! illustratiing the two types of tap changers!!!

Many thanks in advance for your support.

Use this as a starting point for your education, then Google for more, especially from multiple vendors since they will each be extolling the virtues of their particular way of doing things.
