Computer Scienced Graduate Get Into Electrical Design Engineer

03/12/2013 2:01 PM

Dear friends,

I have completed both my Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering in computer science. But i would like to get into the electrical design engineering field. Is there any problem in finding a job since i have graduated in computer Science.

Thanks,

Warm Regards,

Bharat

Yes.

Go back to school.

Some of what you have done will help you. "Electrical design engineering" means many different things to different people.

What part of "electrical design engineering" did you have in mind?

Circuit boards, or power plants?

I guess it depends on what they taught in the Bachelor and Master courses (both in computer science?), and what field of electrical design you want to go in to.

Regardless you will likely need to start off slowly and work your way up. Don't expect to be able to jump into microchip design or anything as these areas require years to decades of practical experience before they will even consider hiring you (it is such a specialised field).

Sounds like time to look for a job at an Engineering firm that will give you the opportunity to get some practical experience in the field of electrical design and see what happens.

It sounds like you should have gotten a computer engineering degree, as this would be a BSCE/MSCE. Computer science is a BA, as they do not get enough math, or physics to be considered BS. You will be limited to only do software where I just retired from. And my experience is Comp. sci. are limited to software, as they typically are window and unix type applications. Where the other engineering is embedded design, and you need to understand analog/digital microprocessor hardware. Then you need to understand signal integrity, which requires electric magnetic fields and transmission line theory, as anything beyond 100ns rise fall times requires addressing this in the system. And processor memory and peripherals are only getting faster. Design a PCI-express 3Ghz interconnect in copper using low cost PWB/PCB fabrication technology. Unless you just happened to have taken these courses as part of your comp sci, you can't get your foot in the door.

You typically can't apply for a EE position unless you can show you've done lot's of hobby or part time work as a technician, or designer for a small company.

Electrical design covers a variety of territory. With your computer background, you might fit quite easily into PLC or microprocessor programming. General logical and quantitative skills should transfer well into any technical area. A lot will also depend on local culture, and whether people think that a degree in one discipline "slots" you into that discipline only. In that respect, I suspect that Indian culture tends to classify people more narrowly and bureaucratically. In any case, good luck in exploring your career and finding an interesting and rewarding position.

In 1967,IEE gave exemption from parts 1 & 2 examinations in electrical engineering for those who possesed a degree(BS) in physics/maths. Those guys passed only final part 3 examination and became chartered engineers without doing any course work in engineering. They never studied engineering drawing, workshop technology, properties of materials etc. Today many of them call them as "Consultants".

You have qualified yourself in good carrier, now why you wish to change it?. Is there more money in electrical design engineering? I do not think so. Better get yourself trained in computer science field by learning more languages.

I double Majored Computer Sci, Electronics Technology, B.S. Class of '90.....

At the time I couldn't buy a job, so I ended up Enlisting in the Army to get the Electronics Experience I needed....

Best Decision I ever made. The experience I gained allowed me to get in on the ground floor of Industrial Maintenance then quickly into Industrial Electrical Maintenance.

Later a Controls Technician, then.....

Now I do Electrical Reliability and Non-Destructive Testing...

The Moral..... Start Small and WORK HARD... Don't be afraid to Retrain.... I continuously do.....

Qualification required depends on the kind of job you are asked to perform. Many technicians and draftspersons have become engineers/consultants without any qualifications, through proven experience/back up. Those who never studied physics/ maths have become electro-mechanical engineers involved in installations(electrical/ plumbing systems). Qualification(theory)may be required to understand how to do calculations for design or to understand how a system works but not for installation/ maintenance because someone else will do it. But it may depend on which part of the world you live in.
