API 1104, Branch Connection, Pipe to Weldotet Joint is Butt Weld or Fillet Weld?

03/16/2013 2:57 AM

Hello,

Welding Code - API 1104

I want to weld 24"X10.5 mm Pipe to 2"X9mm thick Weldolet to form a branch from the mainline. In this case, the joint design is butt weld or fillet weld? I am confused as the joint design is an essential variable as per API 1104! So, butt weld to fillet weld need requalification....Anybody come across this kind of situation before?

Thanks you in advance

The weld of the "Weldolet" or "Sockolet" to the main line is a fillet weld (or combination of fillet welds). If it is a "Weldolet", the weld to the branch pipe is a butt weld; if "Sockolet", fillet weld.
