Original Computer Bug??

03/20/2013 12:03 AM

Not sure I have seen (or found) this anywhere on CR4.

For all you young punks, (I use this term lovingly - since my daughter is a civil engineer!) broadcast this to all you know...

Maybe some seasoned engineers have forgotten this!! Realize that the term "computer bug" has a true meaning. As Grace Hopper was working with a Mark II computer in 1947, full of tubes and relays, there was a problem as they were woking with the calculations. Appears a moth was trapped between some relay contacts and not allowing proper connections to be made. They referred to the repair as de-bugging the system.

The orignal bug was removed and placed in Ms. Hoppers journal.

Thus was born the computer bug and de-bugging. How I wish current bugs were as easy to fix!!!

It always bugged me to find out where bugs came from and why de-bugging does mean getting rid of bugs!

Funny how things really turn out to be!

Nice bug, aeeeehhhh find!

I had the opportinity to participate in some round table discussions with Admiral Hopper. She was a truely fastinating person and a lot of fun! She often mentioned this event in her talks.

I was fortunate enough once to attend a presentation by Grace Hopper. I remember her as one of the more interesting speakers I ever saw during my college days. I also remember her handing out "nanoseconds", that is, pieces of wire cut to a length to represent how far light travels in a nanosecond. She informed us that picoseconds were going to become important in the computer world and that we could find all the "picoseconds" we would need in a pepper shaker.

I have heard of her handing out the nano-seconds, do you recall how long the wire was?

I was thinking about 10 or 11 inches. So, just to see if it would work, I googled "speed of light in feet per nanosecond" and got 0.983571056. More precision than I needed, but closer to 12 inches than 11. I wonder if, as my ability to remember shrinks, my memory shrinks the dimensions of things I try to remember.

First test of my hypothesis confirms my memory shrinks object sizes. When I think back on my children, I remember them all as much shorter than they are now.

And SolarEagle, I don't mean this.
