Current Carrying Capacity of Copper Wires

03/31/2013 12:56 AM

Can any of my engineering friends give me information on table or quick reference guide which gives current carrying capacities of copper wires? Will the current be different for a single wire and multi strand wires of the same cross section?

Dear Lyn,

Thanks for the link, which is useful. In India, SWG is more popular. but is is possible to convert AWG to the nearest SWG.

Dear Mr. thyagups,

The answer is simple.

1. General Consideration - 1000 Amps/Sq.Inch (or) 1.55 Amps/MM^2, rounded to 1.5 Amps/MM^2. DE-RATING FACTOR as APPLICABLE.

2. 2nd Part of the Question - the Answer is YES.

Dear Dhayanandhan,

Thanks for the reply. Now I am able to remember the same formula.

I was told that we may have to de-rate when multi stranded wire is used in place of a single wire of same cross section. But I am not sure about this as I couldn't get supporting material both for or against.

I agree with you that in theory, it should be same for both types.

British Standard 7671. Again, and again, and again... <sigh>....
