Y Reg Fiesta Tailgate Fuse Location

03/31/2013 2:06 PM

Hi all,

I have a Y reg 2001 Fiesta swift. The tailgate will not open via the key (it goes in, but will not turn) nor the inside switch (pushing the switch activates a relay as I can here it clicking, but it does not open the tailgate). I have searched the internet and found what is supposedly the fuse layout for this make and model, however, there appears to be a discrepancy. The diagram shows two rows of fuses (mine is located under the dash next to the drivers door and not on the passenger side) with fuse 45 (the one I am looking for above right), however, in my car there are only the two rows with no other fuses either above left or right.

Does anyone know where this fuse will be? Or any way that I can get the tailgate open? Thanks.

If you look at diagram #12, it refers to #130 & 131. Tailgate lock motor and switch. Might be what you're looking for.

Thanks kramarat.

This could be useful, but I still don't know where the physical location of fuse 45 is.

Did you look in both fuse boxes? There is usually one under the hood.

From the document, the fuse F45, (for the luggage compartment latch), is inside the vehicle in the upper right corner of the fusebox.

I would try dousing the key with wd-40 and inserting it and jiggling, repeat procedure several times, as the locking mech seems to be stuck.....are you sure you have the correct key?

Yes, I do have the correct key as the tailgate has been opened many times before, but simmultaneously stopped working with both the key and the internal switch.

Tried the WD-40 and wingle approach; didn't work.

I do believe that if you can hear the relay clicking than you probably have a Rod or a linking device from the motor to the latch that is either broken or came out of its socket. Sounds mechical to me not electrial.

Remove any inside paneling with a taped up flat screwdriver (so not to scratch the paintwork if clips are used instead of screws) and see if you can get the WD40 in the mechanism itself.

This may be difficult with the door closed, so go to a junkyard first and do two things:-

1) examine a crashed one and see how the mechanism works

2) purchase the paneling off the crashed car so that you can simply "rip" yours off with equanimity and replace it with the new/secondhand one.

You may want to talk to your friendly Ford dealer first!!!!

Two things Manfred, 1. if you hear it working thenits not the fuse.

2. Is the lock frozen? May seem dumb but I live in Wiscosnin and you'd be surprise how many folks get triped up by that one.

I am going to suggest you find a Chiltons or Haynes manual and look it up. You are most likely looking at a small plastic retaining clip inside the liftgate that has broken and allowed the accutating rod to slip free of its unlocking lever.

Thanks to all!

From what you are all saying it does sound like a mechanical problem, so i will try stripping it down by entering into the boot area via the back seats.

A metal key to mechanically open the endgate, together with the electric release, is known as 'belt and suspenders'. It is very rare that both would fail at the same time.

I suspect there is a link bar inside the endgate itself that is to blame, not a fuse.

But, you tell us "...it (the key) goes in, but will not turn)"; if this symptom were alone, I would suspect a bad key or key cylinder, with an eye out for a previously mentioned link bar that is actuated by the cylinder. One way or another, it sounds like a mechanical issue rather than electrical.
