Now that I have had my week of mostly laying around in bed due to having put my lower back out last Sunday today I felt well enough to walk up to the shop and check on my used oil burner. This year since we moved the old house to a different location in the yard the shop boiler is no longer heating anything but the boiler room where the well controls and pressure tank are since we moved the old house last fall to make room for the new house to go in this year.
So anyway I got up there and the boiler is froze solid and the only thing keeping the well system working is one heat tape.
I spent most of my day working on cleaning out everything in the used oil burner pump, filters, nozzle and lines thinking that it just plugged up being that does happen on occasion.
That didn't fix a thing. I have good pressure and flow and the nozzle preheat system is working just fine getting the used oil up to around 230 - 255 F before it injects it out into the boiler and ignites i with a spark gap ignition system just like a normal fuel oil furnace burner does. The spray pattern and volumes are all good but the oil will not burn for anything. I even tried putting my propane torch jet flame right into the spray and it doesn't do anything but sputter and make a fine sparkling mist.
BTW when I designed the system I pre tested it with every imaginable type of oil I could find and everything from as thick as old 140 weight gear lube to 100% synthetic oils all had good stable burn characteristics at that preheat temp.
The bulk tank is a 2000 gallon unit that feeds from about 1 inch off the bottom so what ever I have is obviously heavier than all other oils combined, looks and feels like oil but doesn't burn, freeze or collect in the water separator filter.
So what did I get in my last batch of used oil that made it completely inflammable even with a 230 - 250 F preheat and exposure to a direct flame?
