  1. Buy the OBD II scan code reader (about $ 35.00).
  2. Plug it into the connector under the dashboard.
  3. Turn the key to ON, but don't start the engine.
  4. Allow its self-test pass and then push the READ button.
  5. Once you carelessly read the codes, erase them by pushing the ERASE button.

....but be forewarned, if you're doing it because you think you can immediately pass inspection, there's a delay after a forced reset that's built-in to the OBD II system that prevents it from reporting its status as "Ready" until a certain number of starts and/or sequences have been followed. Here's a cheat-sheet from the Ohio EPA(!) that may help you if that's your goal.
