iPod batteries are specific to the model. An arbitrary lithium polymer battery won't just work. As far as constraints for Li-poly, there are many size/package/voltage/amperage/safety circuit specs; there can also be some quirks for shipping legally. Any company you buy one from will be able to handle the shipping no problem.

Li-polys are sensitive and WILL catch on fire/explode if used or charged incorrectly (trust me - I've seen a building burn down because of a Li-poly that was damaged during shipping and left charging unattended).

If you want a new iPod battery, you can look up how to change it online, just use google. I would suggest buying a used iPod of the same model from Ebay. You might even be able to get replacement batteries there. Or, doll out the cash for a new model - their batteries are much improved.

Check out batteryspace.com...

They stock several different types of replacement ipod batteries, at seemingly reasonable prices.

I've purchased various rechargeable batteries from them multiple times over the past 4+years. They have all sorts of batteries, chargers, and related accessories.

Although mention was made of a damaged battery catching fire, please remember that these batteries MUST use a specially built charger FOR THAT PARTICULAR BATTERY!!!

They can be very problematic otherwise, even downright dangerous!!!

Used correctly in all respects, they are great.

Remember that almost all batteries (in spite of what they tell you) live a lot longer if they are not always on charge!!! Let it get down low before recharging, remove from the charger when it is full or just before....

Store such batteries for long periods of non use in the state at which the unit (the Ipod in this case) says that the battery needs recharging, not fully charged.

Do not let the battery freeze nor leave it in the sun or where it gets very warm.

If it gets very hot in use, remove it from the ipod and leave it somewhere safe outside to cool off, treat it with respect as it may be dangerous....you now have an unknown problem - is the battery defective or the ipod????

One of my reasons why I don't like iPod or Apple, is also something that will hamper you in your search.

They will want you to buy an entirely new iPod and they will not sell you the battery alone. If you do find one, then it's probably illegal or from an electronics "chop-shop" or something. I've heard of Apple suing businesses for intellectual harassment because they sold a battery nearly identical to the one in iPods. And, you void your warranty. If you haven't already modded your iPod (I've seen people do really cool things before) then your best bet is looking into what your warranty covers and if Apple will honor it. Always worth a try. Next time, try iRiver

Check out http://www.techrestore.com/xcart/home.php?cat=259

For $20 it's not worth trying a substitute, with all the dangers mentioned in other posts.
