MV (Medium Voltage) Manhole

04/12/2013 3:51 AM

I would like to know if there are standards to follow,to use,and as a precaution in replacing rusted cable bracket(galvanized) used to support an 300 MM XLPE cables. there are no splices inside the manholes, the cables are energized and my only concern is the metal support of these energized XLPE 13.8kV cables which I am planning to replace. I am planning just to use 15kV safety gloves when tying these cables on the new cable support.

It comes across as a considerable surprise that an anonymous international Engineering forum is being used to gather suggestions on safe working practices when the organisation in question should have these already to hand before attempting the work, based upon a site survey and risk assessment by individuals that can see the job to be done and understand the risks.

You have voiced my sentiments here too. I also find it frustrating that those doing the works seem to have no knowledge of the voltages concerned, cable types being used etc., and it makes one wonder if they are qualified in doing the works. A tad disconcerting. Who is supervising these works? Who is planning them?

What about the guy who is replacing the bracket/support? Does he get gloves too?

yes, it should be used to. I raised this question in this forum to get some inputs and valid references or to know if such type of work was ever practiced without the need to shut off the Cable. While it is possible not to come in contact with the cable during the replacement of the bracket, tying the cable with the braket however would make one to grip the cable by hand; hence using the safety gloves.

There are national safety documents- for instance the following:

http://www.njug.demon.co.uk/pdf/Utilities%20Guidelines%20on%20Positioning%20and%20Colour%20Coding%20of%20Apparatus.pdf

http://www.westernpower.com.au/documents/ldd/UCIManual.pdf

National Electrical Safety Code [NESC] section 30-39

http://www.usmilcom.com/ARMY_GUIDE/3_8_Underground.htm

http://www.empirecitysubway.com/pdf/mnhle_stndrds.pdf

Usually -as already mentioned-the Utility has to provide its own instruction for manholes inspection and maintenance.

Also keep confined space and arc flash requirements in mind while doing this work.
