Tube Sheet Grooving

04/15/2013 8:16 PM

I would like to clear that about TEMA and ASME U stamp.

Now my current job(shell&tube- BEM type) is ASME U stamp + TEMA R

I calculate my tube sheet with ASME UHX inside PVelite.

-Tube to Tube sheet joint type can be choosen as "k" type {Expanded, not enhanced(no grooves)} as per ASME section VIII, Division 1 Table A-2. calculation passed.

-But TEMA, RB-7.24 stated that "when the tubesheet thickness exceed 1", at least two grooves shall be used"

- Can somebody help me to clear that this TEMA, RB-7.24 is necessary procedure or is there any chance to avoid this point?

Because my cooler is very small, design pressure is also low and my tube OD is 10mm only. So I want to go with "exapnded only with no groove" if possible. Thanks alot.

Why is the tubesheet so thick?

not much, it's about 46 mm. But I concern is the space between two tubes' grooving. My tube OD is only 10 mm & tube pitch is 12.5mm. As per TEMA, I need to do groove 0.4 mm deep. So I'll have only 1.7 mm thick of material between two tubes' grooving.

In addition, my calculation is pass as per UHX, TEMA method in PVelite calculation.

So, I would like to avoid the break between to tube grooving.

Thank alot for your attention for my question.

I still don't understand. For a small, low pressure UHX, a 46mm tubesheet seems extraordinarily thick.

However, with that much thickness, the loss of material due to grooving should be insignificant. The hardness of tubes, and any difficulty of rolling, may affect this, though.
