Memories? '50s '60s TV Game Show

04/18/2013 4:37 PM

Apologies-in-advance, but: "OK".... ("I give up!")....
I only post this here, due to recalling the response(s) elicited by "clevis1", with his CR4 post:
Unique Whips end of show song???????No one knows

I have googled til my fingers hurt ... best 'hit' being wiki's "List of American Game Shows" ... Alas , none on the list seem to hit the nail on the head!

There was a program (B&W days as I recall) in which 3 or 4 panelists (celebrities, I believe) would watch as an image was flashed upon the screen in front of them.

They would each get to guess what the photo-image was. When nobody guessed correctly, the image would be "flashed" again, this time for a smidge longer.

More often than not, hilarity ensued, as the contestants (?unwittingly?) PROVED a very important phenomenon ... (our eyes, just like a camera, exhibit a "speed of vision"... {a reciprocal function} ... which is affected by the degree of illumination present).

Most likely all episodes got wiped ... but I'd bet dollars-to-doughnuts that that Kitty Carlisle was (at least occasionally) a panelist (tho' no help from her wiki-page).

Anybody recall those episodes BETTER than I do...? I am beginning to wonder whether my memory is fading faster than already known; i.e., could it be that the "episodes" that I recall were, in ACTUALITY, just "filler-bits" on a totally different game show...?!?

Hi lyn ... ... uh , yer "rapid-fire-reply" probably explains why (I "awkwardly" state) you kinda "missed-the-mark" here.

The reference to the 'whips' thing obviously threw ya. (It was merely an attempt to minimize my 'embarrassment' for posting such a query around here...)

Begin reading (again) at:

I got the point. A B&W show with Kitty Carlisle, maybe.

"What's My Line" came to mind, but I just googled whip for grins and thought I'd post that anyway.

You're In The Picture.....The greatest flop of all time with only one episode aired...
"CBS executives thought they could cash in on Gleason's popularity while also cashing in on the game show craze. The masterminds at CBS really came up with a doozy of a flop. You're in the Picture went something like this: four celebrity panelists would attempt to guess the content of a picture. The corny comedy catch was that the panelists could not see the picture since they were actually part of it."

Actually , that is definitely not the one I am trying to recall (I crossed it on wiki, doing the thorough perusal therein...). That only ran for one single episode, the night of Kennedy's inaguration.

... and , the celebrity panelists themselves were definitely not in the photo-images being flashed on the (slide) screen.

The photos being flashed were oftentimes "simple / silly" things like a close-up of a dead fish-head (eye filling 3/4 of the screen, part of a gill-cover to one side). When flashed for only a split-fraction-of-a-second, the human eye/mind can create all sorts of "guesstimates" as to what it actually was...(!)

I seem to recall another photo having been a "memorable" street-scene from Paris (still, nobody got it on the first try).

Surely (?) somebody else must be from the same "era", having spent many a night glued to the boob-tube trying to outguess those panelists.......(!?!)

Sounds like (or similar to) the Game Show Concentration: "Concentration" is a television game show based on the children's game. Two matching pictures of various items are displayed on a large flip-type game board, and boxes selected in turn by contestants trying to make matches. When a match is made, the boxes are turned over to reveal portions of a puzzle which the contestants must solve. If the contestant does not make a match, the boxes are turned back to their unrevealed position and the next player takes a turn trying to make a match. The program aired on television beginning in 1958, with varying versions continuing until 1991. Hosts of the program have included Hugh Downs, Bob Clayton, Ed McMahon and Jack Narz.

I do , though vaguely-at-best , remember seeing "Concentration" a number of times.

Unless memory is *totally* screwed-up ...(e.g., as previously-mentioned, if the episodes that I am recalling are actually 'snippets' / 'segments' that were a recurring theme of sorts, as part of another show)... then, it was also not Concentration.

Thanks for chiming-in tho' ... !

Ah... memory lane. Looking at the list linked below, It's amazing the number of game shows that have been tried. Game shows are, in a way, the original "reality" show, as it was entertainment that wasn't fictional. Current reality shows are mostly contests of some sort. I guess the news could vie as the ultimate and first reality show format. A good example of a modern version of news as "reality" entertainment is CNN.

You've probably already gone through this list. I checked all the ones in the era you are remembering it from and no luck. From reading through some of the entries, there were game shows that were local to a particular area. Is it possible the game you remember was local or regional? Even though there is a heading in this list for local shows, it's quite possible that, if the show didn't last more than a season, it was missed and not included on the list. I'm impressed with how exhaustive it is. But it is ot hard to imagine many locally produced shows were missed. And some entries have no real details. It's annoying when we can't identify a part of our life or some memories.

How long do you recollect the show ran? That would help in deciding if it would be registered by anyone. Some shows aired only a couple of episodes, but your memory implies a longer run that that. Also, as some entries state, the film records were destroyed. That doesn't help.

There are some nice video memories here, too. (Maybe it's hidden in their archive somewhere.) There is a "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page. Email them and see what leads they can provide. There doesn't seem to be the "normal" controls for watching some of the videos. I right-clicked on an episode of "The Life of Riley" and unchecked, "Play" to stop it.

I'd post in forms having to do with TV history. Because of the time period of interest, there is daily, a decreasing number of people left who would remember and who are also getting online.

Good luck! And if you find out what it was, do post it here. Some of us on the verge of geezer-hood would appreciate and enjoy the knowledge.

Thanks for that link to "Oldies Television" Passerby , I hadn't gotten THERE as yet!

I have gone top-to-bottom, there now ("one-pass")... even sent a "Contact" message.

Didn't see what I'm looking for yet, but, since it was a semi-speedy run-thru, I'm going to go through it bit more slowly again... perhaps over the weekend.

(Kinda-bogged-down right at the moment)

Thanks again for the additional help (and "memories" therein-contained...)!

In my mind, "Whips" + "Show Song" = "Rawhide"

I vaguely remember something I saw as a kid about groucho Marx around 1956..59 with a theme something on the vane you are talking about. Groucho had a few shows in that time period. My memory may also be full of conflicting information too. Has anyone else had memory joggers?

Have you tried "intros" or "theme songs/music" from TV shows? I can repeat every word of every theme song from the 1960s TV shows. I can also recognize the music. And the commercials. Maybe if you heard the show song you would remember.

In response to Passerby's "Is it possible the game you remember was local or regional?",

Sadly, I cannot recall my 'surroundings' at that time well-enough to be certain as to whether the show was being watched during my "early-years" in Ohio (mid-late 60's), or the few "earlier years" in southern California (early 50's - early 60's) which is where I'm more inclined to believe it was.

And (spaceracer) : if there WAS a theme-tune, the memory of same is FAR overshadowed by the recollections of laughter, when a panelist (on the order of Buddy Hackett?) would blurt out a (hilarious) 'positive ID' upon the first "flash" of something totally unidentifiable.

Much more research needed here (unless somebody chimes-in with my answer!)... but, need to shelve things for a few days. (inundated, here!)

That just reminded me of Hollywood Squares.

  1. Hollywood Squares - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Soupy Sales, Wally Cox, Charlie Weaver, Hackett, Paul Lind and many others made that show one of my favorites.

I know exactly the show you are talking about AND I can not find the name either:(They would show just a snippet of a photo...I can't remember if there was a panel or an audience participation....You have described it perfectly!!surely there has to be more than just the two of us that remember this show...It was a close up photo of something...,then they would zoom out until the whole photo was reveled.I loved the show...it had to be sometime in the early to late 50's?I thought of this show today when I received a photo of a butterfly wing, and it looked like shingles on a roof....until you zoomed out.THEN I thought of that show of way back when....I hope someone remembers...I'll keep watching, but you are not losing your mind....the show DID happen!!!
