Energy Management Improvement Projects

04/27/2013 11:31 PM

Dear all,To implement an Energy Management System in industries ( Chemical / Petrochemical / Oil and Gas ) , I think that every company shall have a bank of energy efficiency improvement projects.

What do you think about the criteria for selection and prioritization of these projects?

Cost saving is very important but it is not the only factor when prioritizing the improvement projects

The buck was only one factor; the other was bang.

As with any other project: rate of return on capital employed. Do the ones that give easy wins first, starting withe the ones that are the lowest investment value, and work up from there.

As prices change, the justification changes, so one might expect projects to change priority within the list, new ones to come along, and lower-priority ones drop off the bottom of the list from time to time. It's all part of a continuous review process.

One must get and study Energy Management Projects undertaken in part. Particularly some US University's have done simple and great work in Industry. I remember to come across a session with a distingwished Professor of University of Colorado. He prepared an excellent case studies .Try them first.

You may be thinking of Amory Lovins; I think he is from there, and definitely a good source.

As well as return on investment, other important factors are the ability of the company to resource the project, and the effect of the project on the wider community, more specifically the companies customers.

The first priority must be zero cost projects. Getting the staff to turn out the lights or not run the heating on full blast with all the windows open because it is too hot, is a matter of training people into the right mind set. Without this mindset any other projects will not deliver their maximum potential savings.

The second priority must be to tackle those projects that the company can afford. A new compressor may save more energy than fixing the leaks in the air piping but it will cost more and if the company does not immediately have that extra capital fixing the leaks is more sensible than doing nothing. A new production plant may save even more, but is now the right time to approach your bankers for a major investment?

If the neighbours are complaining about smoke from your boiler, a replacement with more efficient combustion may be lower in the payback league, but will give you an un-costed (by the accountants) dividend in terms of your perceived environmental credentials.

Each company will have a different mix of circumstances, so there is no universal solution beyond priorities 1 & 2.

Let me give some inputs I did in factories I worked.

1.Used Compressed air pressure at the lowest level

2. Have air intake from outside Compressor room. Increase in efficiency and lower noise.

3.Higher than 0.95 PF.

4.Avoid two transformers in series to get lower voltage at factory.

5.Distribute power in HT to sprayed out factory and then do LT locally to reduce line loss.

6. Reduce multiple pumping and use gravity where ever possible.

There are many ways but just giving some examples.

Thank you . more examples will be useful.

And if we have those projects for improvement, what do you think about the criteria to be used for prioritization?
