$5.59 USD Quart Oil?

04/28/2013 11:43 PM

I just bought some motor oil. Name brand. $5.59USD/quart.

That works out to $939.12 a barrel.

Crude is selling for $92.00 USD a barrel.

So, it costs $10.26 USD to process a quart of oil?

What's wrong with this picture?

That's unrefined wholesale crude...You can buy it at market price in 1000 barrel lots....

If they sell it for 5.59 $ then it should have cost them no more than 5.58 to bring it to you, with max. 3 $ to process if transport and packaging has to be added.

These 10.29 is the added value from which you can calculate the real costs to process the oil.

Wait . . .

10.29/5.58= 1.844

939.12 / 1.844 = 509.26 Dollar per barrel

Thats how much the processing probably was.

Check out how much that is in your unit...

3.03 dollar of processing in the oil.

No lubricants are a small portion of the products that are refined from crude. About 9% of the volume. And just like anything else demand controls the price.

That would be .09% for lubricants....Typical Crude oil per barrel breakdown....

Cost to manufacture a one quart plastic oil bottle:
Cost to transport that bottle to filling facility:
Cost of printing the plastic bottle:
Cost to manufacture tamper-evident bottle cap:
Cost of master paper carton (cardboard case):
Cost of... cost of... cost of...

What gets me is the price spread of the same bottle of engine oil between different point of sale locations. This applicable to cat food, diapers, windshield washer fluid, toilet tissue... pretty much any commodity item.

Markup? What markup?Medicine has real mark up.A pill that retails for $5 cost $.05 out the door of the manufacturer. The rest goes to middle men.I have seen plastic 55 gallon drums that once contained Viagra that had been steam cleaned before resale.Point is, the manufacturers do not bottle the pills, they are shipped to a packager that does all of that.Don't know what the retail value of the drum full of Viagra would be, but it is surely many times more than a barrel of oil.

Is it any wonder that the cost of health care is so high?

Just an example, but it is covered by some health insurance carriers,so it is in a gray area.It is considered by some to be essential to a healthy state of mind.

But there are other drugs more expensive, such as Zovorax for shingles, the point was the high markup from the manufactured cost of a product .

A bottle of oil has a long shelf life. And it's price can be spiked many, many times before it ever sells. It's not supply and demand. It's pay oilmen to extort us for what we pay our politicos to negotiate and pay for us as well as pay the shipping for. The oilmen then throttle the refineries we paid for and pay to maintain but don't own, with 'accidents' they are often directly responsible for by contract-supposedly-but never have to pay for. A very cool racket. And everyone says it's legal.
