Nano Bots on Mars

04/29/2013 6:25 AM

With the rapidly advancing technology of nano-bots,and self assembling mechanisms at the Nano scale,it is foreseeable that we could send nano bots to the moon, or Mars, to pre assemble structures ahead of our trying to establish a colony.Raw materials on site could be used to fabricate everything we need to survive. No need to carry everything to the site.

Is this concept an idea in progress?

A sort-of nanobot panspermia/terraforming, perhaps?

The idea is in progress since I read my first science-fiction novel.

I read something the other day about nano robots being able to reproduce or this being the goal at least. But cant find the link anymore.

Shhhhh! If we can send nano bots to do all that there will be no point in sending humans. You're in danger of ruining the plans of those nutty folks who think a trip to Mars is a good idea.

3D printers can reproduce most of their own parts at the current stage of development.3D buildings are being erected using the 3d printing technology, and low-slump cement ;real cement and steel buildings, with piping and conduit automatically installed.Very little manual labor required. All that is required is the programming. Now, fast forward 20 years or so, and build a cement plant(or whatever construction material is to be used ) using nano-bots that self replicate and then incorporate themselves into the structure by linking up with each other. When people arrive, the colonial city could be ready and waiting, enclosed in a dome with breathable atmosphere .By that time, they will have been able to modify DNA to prevent the use-it-or-lose-it problem, with no deterioration of the body due to long term weightlessness or low gravity.Imagine, having the body of your 20's for life, without the visits to the gym.Build it once, and it stays built that way for good.

Asteroids could be mined for resources in abundance.A single asteroid could contain more chromium and nickle than has ever be mined on Earth.

Crashing them into the opposite side of the planet would harm no one, and guiding them to the desired crash point would be a simple matter. From that point, nano-bots could do all the mining and refining to create raw materials for further development of the colonies.

In a hundred years or so, the planet's atmosphere could be reformed, and human DNA modified to the point of no shielding required.

Once the population reaches a couple of billion, we could begin to destroy the planet in earnest, unless we have learned our lessons by then, and become wiser, not just smarter.

With most heavy manufacturing being performed in space,Mars, or on the moon, Earth could return to a pre-industrial ecology.

I am sure once private industry realizes the economy of off-planet manufacturing, the race will be on.

"...With most heavy manufacturing being performed in space,Mars, or on the moon, Earth could return to a pre-industrial ecology. I am sure once private industry realizes the economy of off-planet manufacturing, the race will be on..."

Actually that topic is covered quite well in the first "Alien" movie:

"...The commercial towing spaceship Nostromo is on a return trip to Earth, hauling a refinery and twenty million tons of mineral ore..."

Going to a new planet where there is water/trees will be prudent than going to dry planets like Mars/Moon.

This concept could be the result of that secret ingredient in your coffee!
