Measuring/Detect the Level in Crude Oil Tank

05/23/2013 8:16 AM

what is the best type to level transmitter and level switches to be used for crude oil tank application?

it is possible to use Float type level switches?

They can be used, as well as float-type level transmitters, in principle. However, all companies that handle oil and its products in bulk have established standards for this sort of thing and practically everything else. So the best approach is to obtain a copy of the end Client's instrumentation standards, find a quiet room, sit down and actually read what is in them.

The reason for having such standards is that an unplanned environmental catastrophe with bulk storage installations can have profound implications for the facility, the company, and the neighbourhood. Following the standards ensures that the risk of such catastrophes is rendered as low as is reasonably practicable.

Remember Float Type level switches have poor performance in oil applications because of moving parts i.e float. Only preset density floats can be used in interfaces if there is interface application. For continous measurement Ultrasonic will be good choice. For switch application use capacitance.

For crude oil having tank depth up to 6m or perhaps 8m, it is much better to use ultrasonic analog distance sensor. Banner or Turck sensors are pretty good and they come with 0-10V or 4-20mA output and also may have low-high level alarms.

One good thing about these sensors is that they keep working even when they are dirty. They are also pretty small and can be mounted from top to look downwards at the oil level.

hi bro...

you can use float type application together with a servomotor for analog 4 ~ 20 ma signal transmission.search for sakura level transmitter, here we are using it for upto 16m applications...and the system is stable when float is provided with a guide to prevent any movement because of pump/agitator
