Use the voltage required by the individual generator, transformer, motor ,etc.

Check it for what? ....If you want to test the winding, I suggest a megohmmeter...

You should use a calibrated voltage to test anything.

I really hope we have a language issue at play here. If we do not...

You should test nothing with any kind of high voltage. The nature of your question tells me you are no where near qualified enough to use any type of high voltage, no matter if it is AC or DC.

High voltage kills! In fact any voltage can kill. Get a pro please.

Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions, which will be in the User Manual supplied with each piece of equipment.

If the user manual for any piece of equipment is unavailable, then use this

and get a copy of it sent over from the manufacturer straight away.

It all depends on what test you want to perform. For example, insulation resistance ("megger") test is done with DC. Hipot testing can be DC or AC, depending on what type of equipment you are testing, what conditions you are testing for, and what the manufacturer recommends. Hipot can even be very low frequency (VLF) AC. Contact / connection resistance tests are usually done with DC. Tan-delta, dissipation factor, or Doble power factor tests are always AC. So you can see, there is no single answer to your question.

If you want to know, first find out what tests should be performed on a specific piece of equipment, and then the voltages and test procedures will be defined by the test itself.

It is totally depends on what test you want to perform.
