How to Use Inter-Vlan Routing for a Single Host?

05/28/2013 12:13 AM

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new to the communication industry. I wanted to ask if it is possible to make two or more vlans(say vlan1, vlan2 and vlan3), and then connect only one host of Vlan1 to all the hosts of vlan2 and vice versa?

In short, can i program one of my hosts of one vlan to communicate with hosts of other vlans?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can communicate to multiple vlans from one port by using a "trunk".

You can now actually create a trunk to a server's nic... however, usually servers and workstations are connected to ports in "access" mode.

By having a port on the switch configured as a "trunk", you can easily communicate with multiple vlans.

Of course, if you have a layer 3 device (ie. router or a layer 3 switch), you don't need to worry about communicating with multiple vlans as the device will "route" the traffic to the appropriate vlan for you.

Hope that helps!

Paul L.

Thanks loads Paul!

Yes i do have a layer 3 switch. Here is a layout diagram of my network. Can i also create a shared folder among the hosts of a particular vlan and access it from a host of another one?

Vlan1 sharing its shared folder with only one host of vlan2, and not others; is it possible? In this case, host1 sharing a folder with host 4,5,6 and not others. Assuming that one access switch comprises of single vlan only.

The most usual way you would achieve this would be to configure Access Control List (ACL) entries in the Layer 3 switch. These act like firewall rules and either permit or deny traffic between sources and destinations based upon matching attributes in packets. In this case you would only allow traffic between host 2 and hosts 4,5,6.
