Plotting GPS points on a map

05/30/2013 7:05 PM

Does anyone know an easy way to plot 40 or so GPS points on a map?

I am hoping to just type the points in and have them magically appear on a google map or something.

As usual, I don't have a clue. Check this web site which made the statement below.

Well, you can plot two locations on Google Maps, if you tell if to give you directions from one point to the other, but if you want three of more points, you're out of luck. Also, Google has plans to allow for multiple points to be plotted in the future, but in the meantime, I hope you find this page useful!

Good luck

I found how to hit shift and see the gps location for my mouse and how to right click and put in a marker...but I have 48 points to find and mark.

I am really hoping for an easier way to just enter the data I have already converted from degree, hour, minute, seconds to decimal degrees. (gotta love excel spreadsheets for this kind of multiple calculations).

If you have a GPS device you can import the points directly in to a program like Google Earth (alternatively you can move around the map and place marks manually).

I am sure there are better ways thou, I have just never needed to find out (but I am sure some here would know).

That works...not perfect, but I was able to cut and paste in the coordinates.

Thanks!

My son uses open street map to plot his cycle routes from a GPS logger. 40 points would take seconds.

Drew

One way is to create a kml file. There are tutotials on how to do this at the following link. https://developers.google.com/kml/documentation/ It looks difficult at first but I am sure its easy to edit one of the examples and put your data into it instead. I used "Torque" which is an android app which uses the phone to track gps positions in a journey and links via bluetooth adapter to also record engine data, speed etc as you go. I don`t think you necessarily have to log anything other than gps data but its cheap and converts it all for you into Google Earth friendly kml data within the app. Torque is available from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en and I am sure there are other apps out there which you could use. Once in kml format simply load google earth and load the track data. Hope this helps.

I work in the desert, I use a Garmin GPSmap 60Cx and I use the 'track' function. Once I have finished my tracking, I download it to the garmin map program (Windows or Mac) and I got a map with all the GPS co-ordinates and I can import into Google earth too!

Google Earth works well and is free.
