Baldor vs. Leeson Motor for Air Compressor

06/03/2013 5:40 AM

ready to finish the renovation of my air compressor, Craftman. Got a single phase input to 3ph output VFD for 152$... So far Im way under buying just a nice branded electric motor.. A single ph 1.5 from baldors or leesons is approx 400dollars. Have looked at Baldors, and found one that is more or less what do you think of this Baldor brand? or is Leeson better?
Thanks!

Why do you need a VFD for an air compressor? With a 3=phase output VFD, why are you looking for a 1-phase motor?

Consult a qualified Electrician.

I've used both kinds of 3 5 7.5 HP motors. They are both fine motors. More Baldors out there than Lessons but I'd say either one will be fine. Bald or engineers told me their motors dissipate heat better but never had either fail in pump duty.

Forget the VFD.

The attached report deals with matching compressor speed torque requirements with motor speed torque capabilities

I like Baldor Motors, never had one failed yet driving Dresser-Roots Blowers and Parker Hydraulic Pumps

I'm not familiar with VFD ( is that variable frequency drive? ), but have used phase adders to convert single to three phase. The equipment was somewhat complex and probably expensive but purchased by the customer.

So why would you provide single phase power to a VFD and then use it to create a 3 phase output and then install a single phase motor. Why not get your money back for the VFD put that towards the purchase of your single phase motor and save some money.

Baldor or Lesson are both good motors.

Good Luck!!
