New Lithium Battery Not Charging - BP-4L

06/07/2013 12:30 AM

My cellphone's new battery just doesn't seem to charge despite plugging it to the charger many times. The old battery charges. I have heard that new lithium batteries need to be "broke in" or something, but I have plugged this and it shows no signs of giving power.

I just have one charger, any suggestions? Or is this battery a defective one?

I got it online from a good dealer on amazon.

It should come precharged....If it has been allowed to sit for some time discharged, there is a technique I covered "Raising the dead via high voltage arc, the Frank Enstonian method" that can be used to wake up the battery....

You might try any one of several methods, safety wise you are on your own....

I thought of these methods, but decided against them. I guess I will send it back or maybe just get a new one.

After the initial charging, Li-ion batteries can't handle too deep discharging. Anything under 2.5V sustained for enough time will permanently damage its chemistry, and makes it less safe during recharging. That's the main reason a protection circuit is used internally, that doesn't allow recharging if voltage drops under a level. Now if you can measure above ~1 volts somewhere on its connector and it is a NEW, UNUSED battery that hasn't been charged before, I'd say zapping it back to life is safe. This does NOT apply to used batteries, even worse if you don't know for how long they have been discharged. And another thing. For a new battery to get into that mode, means either that it has been on shelf for AGES, or that it was defective. S.M.

A "new" Lithium battery may not provide 100% capacity until it is cycled a couple times. That should be the only break-in conditioning required. The battery should accept/supply at least 75% of its rating on the first charge. If not, I'd return it as defective. Get Amazon to replace it for you.

Not all sellers are honest. Return it and buy one from a different seller!

NEVER EVER BUY CHEAP BATTERIES, GREAT CHANCE OF FIRE/EXPLOSION!!!

I would return it as a first option.

Secondly, buy from a local shop where you can test before purchase.

Thirdly, I have recovered some battery types (Mobiles and Bluetooth devices usually) by careful recharging using an adjustable power supply set to the normal charged voltage of the battery and setting the max current to about c/3 (1/3rd of capacity). I read about it on the Internet somewhere, it works mostly, but not always.

Start off with say a 10 seconds charge and then measure battery voltage while off the supply. (Measure battery voltage first before starting charge as well....).

Retry often and see if the battery voltage starts to rise (you may see the current dropping slightly as charging increases), if yes continue till you are at about 70% of the normal charge......See note below.

NICADS (not your battery type I know), by the way, can be shorted across a car battery, + to +, - to -, for a short time provided you are wearing full safety gear (for the charging above also!).

Note.

If any battery gets really hot, drop them in a bucket of cold water immediately and give them 5 minutes to cool down.

No guarantees, but up to now no battery has exploded.....

Most likely a knock-off battery. The problem would be that it's not reporting it's state correctly. If you had an external charger of some kind, you could get it to charge probably. But then the device that you're trying to use it in would most likely still report a battery problem all the same.

I love my old RAZR V9, yet I'm also having trouble with the battery. I just bought a battery from Ebay, new in the package, but dated 2008. It charged, but when it gets to 2 bars of battery life, it doesn't run long before it's in the red. From full charge to 2 bars is fine, but the last two bars go quickly.

Any ideas?

There is a rumour that these batteries have the date of death (electronically) written in the in-built circuit to prevent accidents.
