LCD Repair

06/06/2013 10:37 AM

I need to repair a small segmented LCD. I have done this before with some success but aligning the elastomeric (zebra) connectors can be difficult. Has anyone done this and if so did you use any type of adhesive or just pressure.

Also I am finding information regarding using graphite powder on the strip and PCB. Has anyone tried this and if so what were the results?

I used segmented LCDs and zebra strips years ago. As I recall the zebra strips are made with dozens of conductors per inch, so typically there were at least 3, and as many as 10, conductors in the zebra strip touching each conductive pad on the LCD.

So I'm thinking there should not be that much difficulty in 'aligning' the zebra strips to the LCD. So long as the zebra strips aren't warped or twisted (due to over-compression) they essentially self-align.

It is extremely important to keep the contact surfaces clean and dry. Use acetone to clean the LCD pads and the contact surfaces of the zebra strips, or use nearly pure isopropyl alcohol (low water content). The contact pads on the LCD are usually ITO and can be scratched and ruined if you are not careful.

I never used graphite powder. I think it might be a bad idea since it is weakly conductive and might create a conductive path between the pads and 'short' some pads together.

Same here. That's the beauty of Z-strips. They're insensitive to alignment.

Clean the LCD glass contacts and zebra connectors with alcohol (if it is not the carbon type), don't touch the glass contacts, the ITO will dissolve slowly over time because if you touch them with sweaty hands.
