Chemical and Mechanical Selection of Electrode

During electrode selection for some special steel or alloy steel , which shall take the precedence , is it the chemical composition or mechanical properties(like tensile strength or yield strength ,elongation and the like),or is it the combo. If they must be compared separately with that of the base metal, what is the requirement to be followed, must the all the chemical composition content of the electrode be above that of base metal, if not all which element shall be priotized, how about the mechanical properties. Is it the same case, above individual mechanical strength value of the base metal.

Have you gone to AWS website? American Welding Society (AWS) - Home Page

Are your welders certified?

Where are you?

Do lives depend on the weld quality?

I hope this is for your back yard and not a commercial product for sale.

What specification are you using?

ASME-IX, and i am preparing the WPQ for ASTM 240 welded to ASTM 240 ,and it's at the stage of electrode selection

no life but the life span of the joints involved depends on it.

I hope this is for your back yard and not a commercial product for sale.

It depends somewhat what you intend to use the electrode for. You might be spot welding, arc welding, electroplating, arc cutting, etc. It probably makes a difference. If you are spot welding I would recommend RWMA-Class 2 electrode material. If you are projection welding, consider class 11 or 12.

the electrode needs to have strong resistance to the loss of metals in order to last any length of time. You have an anode and cathode and if you have strong galvanic action between the two, your project will not last long.

This also depends on the amount of energy and the medium that you are in i.e. mobility of ions.

Dr. Faulk Doering of Germany has multiple patents in electro chemical geo-oxidation and I was a scientist/chemical engineer helping develop this technology in late 1990s- 2000. I don't get into these conversations often as I'm too damn busy and need to focus on the $$ questions. You'll be able to figure out how to find me if you use the information presented and understand I've given technical presentations on this "voodoo science" (it really does work, but most folks just scratch their heads.)

This matter is very examined (theory and practice). Check the catalogs of manufacturers i.e Lincoln, ESAB, Cadwell.................

thx, it seems that these choices have been experimented theoretically and practically by manufacturers or institute, so we just simply respect the catalogs of manufacturers.
